During the Phoenix Mountain Crowd Hunt, Wei Wuxian gets into several mishaps with a family of measuring snakes as they compete over who stands the tallest.
- Black Sheep: The fact that a Jiang disciple also badmouths Wei Wuxian hints that he isn't well-liked by the new disciples of the Jiang Sect, a contrast to his popularity with the previous disciples.
- Instantly Proven Wrong: As a Jiang and Jin disciple badmouth Wei Wuxian and talk about how cruel and evil he is, they immediately come upon the man in question having a height competition with a measuring snake in a gleeful and whimsical manner.
- Mundane Utility: Demonic cultivation can summon fierce corpses, making them frightening fighting tools. Wei Wuxian uses them to... help make him stand taller than a giant measuring snake.
- Ocular Gushers: The first measuring snake that Wei Wuxian encounters bursts into waterfall-levels of tears when it realizes that it's shorter than him.
- Papa Wolf: Parodied with the measuring sakes. When the first and little measuring snake bursts into tears after losing to Wei Wuxian, its father aka a larger snake rushes to its child's side to take on the Yiling Patriarch. When that snake loses to Wei Wuxian (and Lan Wangji), the enormous grandfather snake shows up to avenge both its child and grandchild.
- Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Lan Wangji is initially keen to protect Wei Wuxian, but he changes his mind and slides out of view after he sees a 50-feet-long measuring snake approach them and Wei Wuxian gets the idea of challenging it.
