Recap / Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers S3E22 Follow That Cab

Go To

On her way to meet with a world-famous gymnast coach, Kimberly's car is stolen! She and Junior Police Officers Bulk and Skull commandeer a taxi cab and attempt to give chase after the bandit. Lord Zedd and Rita Repulsa turn the taxi into the Crabbie Cabbie monster, with the trio still trapped inside! In order to save their friends, the Rangers must use their new Shark Cycles to outmaneuver Crabbie Cabbie and safely extract his passengers... if they can!

Tropes

  • Adaptational Villainy: Oboroguruma was a villain but had sympathetic qualities due to his passengers not treating him with proper respect. Crabby Cabbie is just a stereotypical leafer who actively tries to run people down for his own amusement.
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking:
Alpha 5: Aye-yi-yi! Lord Zedd and Rita have created a Crabby Cabbie! And he's charging double the going fare!
  • Big "YES!": Zedd in response to Crabby Cabbie luring the Rangers in.
  • Captain Obvious:
Rito: The way I see it, Ed, we need a fool-proof way to defeat the Rangers.
Zedd: Oh, is that the way you see it?
  • Creator Cameo: Mark Richardson appears as the cab driver that Bulk and Skull commandeer the taxi from.
  • Dumbass Has a Point: Rito suggests turning a Ranger into a monster and then using that creation against the others. Zedd thinks he might be on to something for once.
  • Filler: Downplayed; while it doesn't do much in terms of advancing the plot, some important points are brought up in favor of the upcoming "A Different Shade of Pink" three-parter. Namely that Kat is a human under Rita's spell, much like Tommy before her, and that Kimberly is excited to meet Gunther Schmidt, a world-famous gymnastics coach.
  • Human Shield: Rito's idea, in a nutshell, is to transform one of the Rangers to prevent the others from fighting him/her. Zedd simply expands on it.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Bulk and Skull actually help the thief get away with Kimberly's car much to her dismay. Thankfully, they make up for it by arresting the guy near the end.
  • The Reveal: Up to now, Katherine's true nature has been sketchy at best. Her ability to transform into a cat plus her seemingly undying loyalty to Rita made her out to be a monster with a human form similar to Scorpina in the past. All of that is discredited immediately seeing her flashback to when she got a Good Samaritan award from a teacher of hers, finally revealing that she is indeed a good-natured human being that was captured and brainwashed.
  • Sentient Vehicle: The Crabbie Cabbie is a living taxi with a Brooklyn accent and a bad attitude.
  • Stupidest Thing I've Ever Heard: Rita's opinion of her brother's suggestion, although it does give Zedd an idea. (Of course, Rita would find the idea far less stupid when she has it in the second season of Zeo.)
  • Surrounded by Idiots: Zedd's first scene is him bemoaning this.
Zedd: I rule over a dominion of losers. None of you know how to defeat the Power Rangers! I'm disgusted with all of you!
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: In a world that seems to almost enjoy seeing them get the short end of the stick, Bulk and Skull make their first successful arrest with the guy who stole Kim's car.
  • Too Dumb to Live: The car thief steals Kimberly's car in broad daylight with witnesses passing all around him. If it hadn't been for the populace of Angel Grove being so dense along with Bulk and Skull's obliviousness, he probably would've been arrested right there on the spot.
    • Not like Bulk and Skull are any better: a guy wearing all black with shades whose acting inconspicuously doesn't set off any alarm bells in their minds. Barely half a second after he drives off, Kimberly comes along and rightfully points out that the guy stole her car.
