Go To

In order to save Kimberly, the Rangers are forced to agree to pilot the Shogunzords for Rita and Zedd. But all is not lost. While Billy uses his technological know-how to try reclaim the new Zords for the side of good, the White Ranger attempts to rescue the Pink Ranger. But with the See Monster prepared to strike the Rangers, and Lord Zedd himself confronting Tommy, do any of our heroes stand a chance?

Tropes

  • Bad "Bad Acting": "Help, Lieutenant. It's a monster."
  • Bittersweet Ending: The rangers rescue Kimberly, and reclaim the Shogunzords for good. Unfortunately Ninjor and the Falconzord are still captured (and with the Falconzord captured, the Rangers can't use the Ninja Zords), the Pink Crane Power Coin is still in Lord Zedd's possession (though Kimberly's connection to it has now been severed), and Kat is still under Rita's spell.
  • Bring It: After the Rangers take control of the new Zords.
Tommy: Okay, Zedd, the power source is on the other foot. I dare you to produce your monster now.
Zedd: He dares me, does he?! [grabs Rita's staff] Here, Tommy! A present from me to you! Make my monster grow!
  • Call-Back:
    • The device they used to transport Tommy to Lord Zedd's castle is the same one used in the "Green Candle" two-parter from Season 1.
    • Tommy reassures Kimberly on how she comforted him when he was losing his Green Ranger powers.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Rita reminded Finster that she used to be in charge, back in season 1.
    • Zedd's staff was established back in "The Mutiny" as being a magically transformed snake. It reverts back to the snake form after Tommy damages it with Saba.
  • Foreshadowing: At first, Kat shows mocking concern for Kimberly's situation, but then it seems to turn genuine.
Kat: I wish it didn't have to be this way. [her eyes flash red and her expression changes] I really do...
  • Funny Bruce Lee Noises: When the epic showdown between Lord Zedd and the White Ranger finally takes place, Zedd asks Tommy "Are those hi-yahs really necessary?"
  • Hollywood Hacking: A fantastic example: Billy manages to hack into the Shogun zords and free them from Zedd and Rita's control.
  • Lampshade Hanging: Aside from the above remark about Tommy's "hi-yahs", there's another moment where Tommy brandishes Saba - which is very obviously a prop to the viewers - and Zedd declares "Come, Tommy! You can't be serious with that toy sword!"
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: Rita sending the new Zords to Angel Grove early gives Billy the time to reprogram their power source and take control.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: Tommy vs. Zedd. Even with Tommy's skills and the White Ranger abilities, Zedd is still part of the Big Bad Duumvirate (and especially even with how badly Villain Decay had set up at this point in the show). Tommy gets his ass kicked in one-on-one combat and only barely ekes out a draw by sheer chance (by targeting Zedd's staff).
  • Throw the Dog a Bone: After threatening to toss Bulk and Skull out if a monster doesn't turn up, Lt. Stone dozes off and gets surprised by a kite with a dragon on it. Bulk says they should run with it so they can keep their badges.
  • Throwing Your Sword Always Works: Tommy does this with Saba to catch Zedd off-guard and strikes his staff, which reverts to its original snake form, forcing Zedd to withdraw.
  • Villainous Breakdown: Played for laughs, as Zedd laments losing his new Zords and Tommy breaking his staff.
Zedd: This job used to be fun.
