Recap / Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers S2E8 The Power Stealer

Go To

The Ranger teens head yet another clean-up drive in Angel Grove Park. Lord Zedd sends down the Octophantom monster, who siphons off most of Tommy's Green Ranger powers. He also captures most of the Rangers, leaving only Billy & Jason to free their friends and defeat Octophantom via his only weakness: his vanity.

Tropes

  • Art Shift: When we see the Putties appear, it's through the lens of the video camera, with the footage having the same quality as videotape, which was how MMPR was actually filmed; filters were applied to make it looked filmed.
  • Badass in Distress: Octophantom captures Tommy early on. Later, he gets Zack, Trini, and Kimberly, with Jason only narrowly escaping.
  • Berserk Button: Octophantom over his trunk getting hit.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Octophantom looks reasonably intimidating, but he openly acts silly and vain. Nonetheless, he can take on multiple Rangers at once and nearly gets the better of Jason one-on-one.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Before Jason can be captured, Billy arrives and hits Octophantom with his lance.
  • Big "YES!":
    • Jason over Billy freeing the others.
    • Zedd after tossing Octophantom his grenade.
  • Bittersweet Ending: Mostly sweet, as the Rangers once again prevail and muck up Bulk and Skull's videotape stunt, but Tommy isn't with the group in the last scene and is reportedly left troubled by his powers continuing to weaken.
  • Bring It: Before escaping with the others, Octophantom mocks Jason and says to meet him at the quarry if he dares.
  • "Eureka!" Moment: Billy upon seeing Octophantom hesitate during the fight to admire his own reflection.
  • Faux Affably Evil: As Tommy is chained up in a chamber.
Zedd: Welcome, Green Ranger. Glad you could drop by.
  • The Fighting Narcissist: Octophantom
  • Flat "What": Trini's reaction over Bulk and Skull claiming to have video evidence of the Rangers' true identities.
  • Flaw Exploitation: Octophantom is incredibly vain. Billy designs a shield for Jason that doubles as a mirror in order to distract him during the fight. As expected, Octophantom passes up a winning blow to admire his reflection, giving Jason the opportunity to blast him.
  • Friendship Moment: Jason thanking Billy for saving his skin.
  • Innocuously Important Episode: Its brief, but a few shots show Octophantom punching the Thunder Megazord, marking the first time in the series that the Megazord was used in non-Sentai footage.
  • Is This Thing Still On?: The cameraman ran when the Putties appeared, leaving his still-running camera on which recorded the teens morphing. Bulk and Skull got the tape, and would've played it before everyone if Zack hadn't figured out how to switch the tape. Billy then plans to erase the part where they morphed.
  • Let's Split Up, Gang!: Jason goes on ahead to face Octophantom, while Billy stays behind at the Command Center to build the mirror shield.
  • Little "No": Jason's response to Octophantom being poised to win.
  • Mix-and-Match Critters: Octophantom is a combination of an octopus and an elephant. Zack reasons he must be very strong, and he most definitely is.
  • Mythology Gag: Octophantom's staff is from Choujin Sentai Jetman.
  • Not in the Face!: "I said watch the trunk!"
  • Rule of Three:
    Kimberly: Putties!
    Cameraman: Putties!
    Bulk & Skull: PUTTIES!!
  • Shout-Out: The switched tape plays an episode of Saban's Around the World in 80 Dreams (aka Les Aventures de Carlos).
  • Shut Up, Hannibal!:
Octophantom: The power transfer's almost over! It looks like you're all alone now!
Jason: I may be standin' here alone, but my friends are still with me in spirit! And now, you're goin' down!
  • Sissy Villain: The Octophantom doesn't look very feminine, but he certainly acts that way. He's so vain that Billy is able to distract him by getting him to pause - mid-battle, no less - to admire himself in a mirror, and enable the heroes to gain the drop on him. It's worth noting that in the uncut Zyu2 footage during the Megazord fight, Octophantom appears to sissy slap the robot which actually knocks it down.
  • This Cannot Be!: Tommy over being captured and his powers being siphoned.
  • This Is Gonna Suck: After the first fight with Octophantom, Jason says it's going to take a lot to win this time.
  • Unsportsmanlike Gloating: Octophantom acts like a bratty child after scoring a good hit on the Thunder Megazord. His jubilation doesn't last long.
  • We Will Meet Again: Escaping with a captured Tommy, Octophantom promises to see the other Rangers again very soon.
