Recap / Mickey Mouse S 5 E 4 Surprise

Go To

"Surprise!" is the 4th episode of Season 5 of the new Mickey Mouse (2013) series created by Paul Rudish for the Disney Channel and Disney.com. It's the 82nd in the series and was made to coincide with Mickey Mouse's 90th anniversary (which falls on the day of the short's US premiere).

Mickey wishes for a surprise-free birthday, but Minnie's idea to fulfil his desire might make it a surprise in itself...

Tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch: As Mickey and friends begin to plummet through the air, Mickey suggests they "lose some weight." One would assume this means dropping one of the characters, but instead they're immediately seen working out as they fly up.
  • Bigger Is Better: After baking an old-fashioned cake for Mickey, Minnie becomes obsessed with making it bigger. She eventually makes one big as a building, but even then she isn't satisfied and tries to use Von Drake's growth ray (which was being used to make the ingredients bigger) to make the cake bigger still. Unfortunately, the ray gets melded to Minnie's head, and it makes the cake grow uncontrollably, forcing Mickey to save all his friends.
  • Birthday Episode: This short is about Mickey's birthday.
  • Birthday Suit Surprise Party: One of Mickey's previous surprise parties happened when his friends surprised him while he was taking a shower.
  • Call-Back:
  • "Eureka!" Moment: When Minnie becomes corrupted, Mickey sadly states "I wish there was some way to get through to her", which inspires him to blow out the cake's candles and use his birthday wish to free her.
  • Extra-Long Episode: The sixth 7-minute episode in the series.
  • Friendly Enemy: Pete attends Mickey's birthday parties, and also helps Minnie make his cake.
  • Instant Flight: Just Add Spinning!: Mickey twirls Goofy's head around so that it becomes a helicopter when it unwinds, using it to fly and save the others.
  • Mythology Gag: Donald's houseboat has a picture of his distant relative Malcolm McDuck.
  • Noodle Incident: One of the flashbacks include a part where Mickey's friends surprise him is in his car, while he is driving. The car explodes, ending the flashback.
  • One-Winged Angel: Minnie, of all people, when she accidentally gets connected to Professor Von Drake's growth ray.
  • Sanity Slippage:
    • Minnie gets obsessed with making Mickey's cake bigger and bigger, eventually becoming fused with the growth machine and ascending to omnipotent status.
    • Mickey also suffers from this when he thinks his friends are off planning a surprise for him when he specifically asked them not to.
  • Surprise Party: After a series of past incidents involving these at the worse times (at the Dentist, on the road, in the shower), Mickey is left traumatized enough to beg his friends to make the latest one normal and surprise-free.
