Art by Crash X Fusion: A deal is struck.
Eda comes to learn of the trouble Luz has gotten herself into, leading to some mother/daughter tension.

Tropes that appear in this Chapter:

  • The Cameo: Amity and Boscha briefly appear as the former escorts the latter away after her eye is patched up.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: After Eda found Luz, she spent a great deal of time trying to find someone to hock her off on. By the time she finds someone who would take her — a nun-ran human orphanage — she's grown attached to the infant and decides to adopt her instead.
  • Department of Child Disservices: As Principal Bump points out, the parents of the children Luz targets won't hesitate to contact the Emperor's Coven and have her taken away from Eda.
  • Doorstop Baby: As mentioned above, Eda attempted to leave Luz at an orphanage to be raised by nuns only to find one of them on the porch and try to hand Luz off but changed her mind.
  • Eyepatch of Power: Boscha ends up wearing an eyepatch after the injuries she got last chapter were treated.
  • Flashback B-Plot: A good portion of the chapter shows how Eda tried to find baby Luz a home.
  • Foreshadowing:
    • The Regal and Harwitch families are mentioned.
    • While trying to get baby Luz to stop crying, Eda mentions having an imp ex.
  • The Ghost: The so-called mystery solving teens and their Cerberus.
  • Homosexual Reproduction: As mentioned by Principal Bump, Boscha has two mothers.
  • Internal Reveal: It's here that Eda finds out that Luz was lying to her and that she was put in the Detention Track.
  • Karmic Butt-Monkey: Luz purposely provokes Boscha for the fun of it after she sees her patched up eye.
  • Lampshade Hanging: Principal Bump ends up admitting how messed up it is that he lets Boscha get away with anything.
  • Laugh Track: While Eda is looking for a family to give Luz to, King is playing with a tape recorder with a recording of laughter on it.
  • Let Me at Him!: After Luz ticks Boscha off, Amity has to restrain and drag the triclops away.
  • Magically-Binding Contract: Part of the conditions for Luz staying in Hexside means that Luz and Eda have to sign a magical contract. The contract will cause birds to fly out of their mouths for the rest of their lives if Luz is unable to pass the term. Eda also has to have a legal steady job as part of the contract, Bump offering her a position as the groundskeeper.
Magic-Contract: The contract is complete; the deal is set! Make sure to work hard, or your mouth becomes a bird’s nest!!! BRAW-HAW-Haw-hahaha…!!!
  • Minimalist Cast: In present day, the Clawthornes, King, Hooty, Amity and Boscha are the only main characters to appear. Principal Bump is the only supporting character to do so.
  • Out of Focus: As the above trope shows, Willow and Gus don't appear for the first time.
  • Point of Divergence: The destruction of Detention Hall, which led to the subsequent creation of the Detention track, has already occurred. There's also the fact that Principal Bump agreed to let Luz attend Hexside and under his protection.
  • Raised by Wolves: Evoked. After finding Luz, Owlbert suggested this for her. Eda even considered it but they declined since they knew they would just eat the infant. She also considered leaving her with the Bat Queen and an imp.
  • The Reveal:
    • Boscha is revealed to have two mothers.
    • Eda mentions in a flashback that she once dated an imp.
  • "Scooby-Doo" Hoax: The reason why there is a vacancy with Hexside's groundskeeper is because the last one was busted by a group of young mystery sleuths and their Cerberus when they caught him acting like a ghost gopher to hide his crystal ball thefts, an obvious Shout-Out of Scooby-Doo.
  • Scylla and Charybdis: Since a lot of Luz's victims are from prestigious families with political connections, they could have Luz and Eda sent to the Conformatorium with Bump unable to defend them. To rectify this, Bump gives them a choice: either he expels Luz and leaves both of them at the mercy of the authorities, or he has them both sign a Magically-Binding Contract that will curse them with bird-mouth if she is unable to bring her grades up and pass the exams at the end of term. Eda agrees to the latter and makes Luz co-sign it.
  • Shock and Awe: In response to King calling her a cow, Eda zaps him with lightning.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The student Luz punched on her first day is named after the Devil, Lucifer.
    • Along with the above mentioned "Scooby-Doo" nod, Eda mentions not wanting to leave baby Luz with the troll, Grumbles McKiltskin.
  • You're Not My Father: By the end of their argument, Luz slip-yells that Eda isn't her mother, a hurt Eda grounding her then and there.
