Prologue: Twelve Years Later

We take a glimpse of a possible future set 12 years after the Day of Unity.

Tropes that appear in this Chapter:

  • Alternate Timeline: As stated by the Guardian, this is regarded as non-canon to the main series showing what may happen in Book 3 and the spinoffs, and what won't.
  • Babies Ever After:
    • Barcus and the Cerberus sisters had puppies, one of whom was adopted by Luz and Amity, Dylan Clawblight.
    • Possibly for Margo and Hamilskin: while they have a son now, it isn't stated whether or not Pete is their biological child.
    • Rafael and Angie still had Mariposa, and she grows up to become an interdimensional exchange student at Merlin Meadows.
    • Nina, Donna, & Lambi are the other known witches of their generation to be expecting children, the latter two being the carriers.
  • Bait-and-Switch: Katie is introduced working on her family farm, implying Tabrella got together with Jackie. After the anniversary ceremony when the Diamantos return home, Tabrella's wife comes home and the former mentions seeing her at the ceremony, but Jackie wasn't in attendance. Turns out Tabrella married Emily!!!
  • Big Sister Instinct: Emily has this towards her brother Peter "Pete" Tricks, intervening when he's getting bullied to keep him out of trouble with Faust.
  • Brick Joke: During the Clawblights' breakfast, Phil notes that Dylan will likely get detention for causing trouble. Sure enough, Lilith punishes him for trying to make a homunculi army to conquer the school, and Phil rubs it in Dylan's face later.
  • Call-Back:
  • The Cameo: Boscha is the pro grudgby player on the junior tryouts poster the Coven Crusaders spot.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Sam gifts Phil a pair of exorcist gloves which can pull a ghost out of whoever they're possessing. Phil doesn't think highly of them until he uses them to save Celine from her possession by Grandpa Kettle.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Phil mentions how the Slitherbeast used to live at the Owl House for some time.
    • It turns out that the Clawblights' home is build around the Grom tree.
  • A Day in the Limelight: Phil, Kay, and Katie (as well as Blossom and Vespa) are the faces of the new generation along with Emily's brother Pete Tricks.
  • Demonic Possession: Celine ends up getting possessed by Grandpa Kettle, who attempts to forcibly teach her class about how things were in his day. Phil (with the help of his exorcist gloves) and Sid are soon able to free Celine.
  • Due to the Dead: The pilot ends with Luz visiting a grave dedicated to Eda, who passed away from unknown causes during the Time Skip.
  • Expository Hairstyle Change
  • Expy:
    • More My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic-inspired characters appear alongside the now-tweenage Katie (Sweetie Belle), with Blossom Courtland and Vespa Dashers (Apple Bloom and Scootaloo) joining her to form the Coven Crusaders, Jennifer Gemstone and Sylvia Sporkett being their Diamond Tiara and Silverspoon, and Lyra Hedgewock, St. Epiderm's teacher on Human Studies 101, is based on Lyra Heartstrings.
    • Dylan Clawblight, Barcus & the Cerberus sisters' son-turned Luz and Amity's adopted son, is based off of Scrappy Doo.
    • Annie and Jaspin are based off of Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Yukio, with similarities to Go-Go Tomago and Honey Lemon.
    • Fishstick is a tomcat who is based off of Paulo from the webcomic, Bittersweet Candy Bowl.
  • Foreshadowing: While talking with Nina, Emily mentions that her wife can be scary like both of Nina's when angered. This harkens back to how Tabrella had been to Emily after chewing her out for killing Duke, hinting at Tabby being Emily's wife.
  • Forgiveness: Given their interactions, Luz, Nina, and Tabrella have long forgiven Emily for what she did to them in the past and the fact that she's one of the heroes attending the ceremony on top of even being back on the Boiling Isles shows that she has long since been re-accepted by the populace. Hell, Nina is one of her co-workers at Glandus and Tabrella is her wife.
  • Gadgeteer Genius
  • Given Name Reveal:
    • The girl whose family Puck saved from the Jean-Lucs on the Day of Unity is named Jaspin.
    • Larry and Hikari's last names are respectively mentioned to be Garber and Sticks by Luz during her anniversary speech.
  • Happily Married: Several couples have gotten married over the years: Luz and Amity, Cross and Lindsay, Nina, Donna, and Lambi, Willow and Skara, and Emily and Tabrella.
  • Honorary Aunt: Sam has gone from Amity's shadow to her own witch and Cool Aunt of Phil and Dylan. Meanwhile, Vespa refers to Lindsay as her aunt when she brings her up.
  • In Spite of a Nail: Meteora was de-aged and got to have a new childhood being friends with Mariposa Diaz.
  • Kid Hero All Grown Up: Just about everyone who was a Kid Hero in the main series. Phil is now fifteen, the Coven Crusaders are about twelve, and every other kid their age is somewhere in those radiuses.
  • Kill the Parent, Raise the Child: Emily killed Duke Eadbeaton, Katie's father, on impulse when she was just a baby. Now she's become Katie's stepmother after falling for and marrying Tabrella.
  • Lampshade Hanging: The Guardian has no idea how Roger ended up in the LCU and tells the reader to just go with it.
  • Like Parent, Like Child: Phil and Dylan respectively take after Amity and Luz, with Dylan trying to be even more of a menace that Luz and Eda ever were when they went to Hexside.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • Lilith has replaced Bump as principal of Hexside in this timeline, referencing the Owl House pilot which showed her in Bump's place before he was created.
    • Skara's the only Junior Bad Girl Coven member to be seen in her epilogue design from "Watching and Dreaming".
  • Noodle Incident: Dylan's become a harbinger of doom for Hexside just like his formerly delinquent mother and chaotic grandmother, having caused a great deal of trouble for the school, like sending the whole school to another dimension once.
  • Offscreen Breakup: At some point, Cross and Donna ended things between them, and where they currently stand now is unclear.
  • Offscreen Romance:
    • After ending her relationship with Cross, Donna entered another three-witch relationship with Nina and Lambi, becoming pregnant with Nina's child(ren) alongside Lambi.
    • The penultimate scene shows Emily and Tabrella are married, meaning or implying things between the two of them with Zee and Jackie, respectively, didn't stay strong.
  • One-Steve Limit: Two more characters named Peter join Peter Bloomhog: Peter "Pete" Tricks and Peter Van Helsing, the human mythology teacher at Merlin Meadows.
  • Pregnancy Makes You Crazy: The reason Nina looks so exhausted is because Donna and Lambi are pregnant with her kittens and are acting very emotional and sensitive from their hormones, blowing up at the smallest things and leaving poor Nina in the middle of their arguments.
  • Prehensile Hair: Kay, who now has hair, has this ability due to having tendrils for hair.
  • Rank Up: Beck took over as Headmistress of St. Epiderm.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Kay being able to use her hair tendrils as extra hands when handling machinery makes her bear a resemblance to Entrapta.
    • Among Merlin Meadows' exchange students from Hell are Cyra, Abigail, and Rigel from Newest Pup in the Family.
    • Apparently, Roger Smith somehow ended up in the LCU and became the new owner of the Pour-Ta-Geist after Geist sold it to him.
    • Phil's concerns that he won't be able to live up to his mothers' legacies mirrors Ayzee's concerns in Moringmark's Owl House: The Next Generation.
  • Time Skip: It's been twelve years since the Day of Unity, the original Ensemble Cast has grown up, and several kids who were just infants during that point in time are thriving among a new generation of witches, demons, humans, and other-realmly creatures.
  • Turning Back Human: Margo and Hamilskin have been saved from their petrified states and are now raising a boy named Peter.
  • The Un-Reveal: We don't get to learn what Willow, Gus, Skara, and Hunter do for a living.
  • Unseen No More: Jackie's baby sister Blossom Courtland and Tracy's baby sister Vespa Dashers (at least older variants of them) both debut in this chapter, both having been mentioned in "Coming Off a Little Shystream" and the Mane Five's post-Book 2 interviews.
  • What Does She See in Him?: Due to the Coven Crusaders seeing Cross and Lyra get into one of their usual arguments about their respective professions and lack of respect for each other's (Cross' dragon studies, Lyra's interest in humanity), Vespa openly says that she doesn't understand why Lindsay married Cross.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: Several characters are intentionally left out and not brought up so that the story can continue.
  • "Where Are They Now?" Epilogue: The chapter shows what happened to the cast in this alternative future.
    • Luz and Amity are now married as the 'Clawblights' and living with Phil and their adopted dog demon son, Dylan. Amity helps with general abomination-themed problems with her former classmates Puffer and Gavin while Luz designs comic book characters, with plans to be an independent artist.
    • Sam, having become a real witch, now travels around the Isles.
    • The Thians family have returned to the Boiling Isles and Kay is now a student at Merlin Meadows (which now hosts several exchange students from the Human Realm and Hell) while Levi and Goonla continue to run their restaurant in the docks.
    • Emily, having made peace with those she wronged, has married Tabrella and become Katie's stepmother, working as a teacher at the newly reformed Glandus High. They live on a farm together.
    • Katie now attends St. Epiderm with Jackie's sister Blossom and Tracy's sister Vespa, forming the Coven Crusaders, a group who explores different interests.
    • Boscha, unsurprisingly, became a professional grudgeby player.
    • Lilith has become Hexside's principal, and Celine and Mrs. Whiskabee are teachers there. The latter has also adopted an orphaned werecat named Fishstick.
    • Fan and Drusillia have become teachers at Merlin Meadows.
    • Cross teaches a class about dragon culture at St. Epiderm and is married to Lindsay. He has a rivalry with Lyra Hedgewick, the school's Human Studies teacher.
    • Like Emily, Nina has also taken up teaching at Glandus in Beast Keeping. She's married to both Donna and Lambi, both of whom are pregnant with Nina's kittens.
    • Eve has become a reporter and Tyler acts as her cameraman.
    • Raine was elected the chancellor of the Boiling Isles.
    • Eda turns out to have died under unknown circumstances, as has Grandpa Kettle.
  • Wrench Wench: Kay has grown to be one, actively repairing the appliances in her family's restaurant or designing her own machines.
