Recap / Lucifer (2016) S05E08 "Spoiler Alert"

Go To

In the aftermath of the capture of the Whisper Killer, Chloe suspects that there may be another, much more dangerous, killer roaming out there. She gets kidnapped by Michael, who has a bigger plan in mind, sparking Lucifer and Ella to search for her and leading them to learn an awful truth. Meanwhile, Amenadiel is worried when Charlie gets sick.

Tropes present in the episode include:

  • Aborted Declaration of Love: Lucifer doesn't finish his love confession to Chloe upon noticing that time is standing still.
  • Bluff the Impostor: Chloe intentionally mixes up the Whisper Killer's murders while interrogating the copycat.
  • Cassandra Truth: Invoked by Lucifer, who points out how he has never hid his identity as the Devil from anyone after Dan is upset that Chloe knew.
  • Chair Reveal: Lucifer and Ella see a victim of the Whisper Killer sitting in her house, having badly decomposed since the murder happened a week ago. To make matters worse, they think at first that it is Chloe.
  • Cliffhanger: God breaks up Lucifer's and Amenadiel's fight with Michael and Maze, stating that he doesn't like them fighting.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Back in "Deceptive Little Parasite", Lucifer snarked to Linda that his father doesn't look like Morgan Freeman. Come this episode and it turns out to be... not entirely true.
    • Dan reminds Lucifer that he hates roller coasters, as we saw in "Boo Normal".
  • Damsel in Distress: Chloe gets kidnapped by Michael early on, and as a result is absent for much of the episode. To be fair, her kidnapper is a superpowered angel, and judging by her last voicemail, she puts up a brave but futile fight against him.
  • Death Glare: As soon as she knows Lucifer's okay, Chloe gives one to Dan for shooting him.
  • Evil All Along: Pete is the original Whisper Killer. The person whom Lucifer and Chloe captured in the last episode is a copycat.
  • Faceā€“Heel Turn: Maze makes one, when Michael promises to grant her a soul in exchange for working for him, as well as feeling betrayed by Lucifer, who never told her the truth about Lilith.
  • Foreshadowing: Early on, we see that Lucifer has apparently spent some time plotting the perfect revenge on Dan for shooting him— although it quickly gets shunted aside when he discovers Chloe's voicemail and realizes that she's been kidnapped. We find out what he was planning in "Daniel Espinoza: Naked and Afraid".
  • Freudian Excuse: Pete's victims are all women because he was verbally abused by his mother, he destroyed their vocal cords because his mother "screamed at him all the time", and he put lilies in the murder scenes because his mother grew them in his childhood home.
  • Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: Ella retorts "A lot of people have crappy childhoods, Pete. We don't become serial killers". Pete just shrugs at her remark.
  • Good Angel, Bad Angel: Lucifer and Michael do this to Amenadiel near the end, with a classic shot of them being on the opposite sides around his shoulders. And yes, obviously the Devil is the "good" angel in this scenario.
  • Heroic BSoD: Lucifer nearly enters one after Chloe gets kidnapped.
  • Heroic RRoD: After Michael stokes Amenadiel's parental fears once Charlie is revealed to be a normal human, his time-slowing powers overclock and cause him to stop time altogether.
  • Innocently Insensitive: While searching for Chloe, Maze asks Lucifer if it is possible for a demon to gain a soul. Lucifer brushes it off and tells Maze that it is impossible, clearly not realizing how important this is for her. Later on, after Maze protects Michael, Maze reveals that she is working with him because he promised her a soul. Once again Lucifer doesn't do himself any favors when he tells her that's impossible since she's "just a demon."
  • Irony: Lucifer (the Devil) is the shoulder angel while Michael (the angel) is in the devil position.
  • Kick the Dog: Michael tells Amenadiel that it was easier to manipulate his parental instincts than trying to turn Lucifer's loved ones against him.
  • Loud of War: As part of Maze's attempts to torture the copycat killer, she apparently subjected him to "It's a Small World" on repeat (as well as breaking five ribs and tearing a rotator cuff).
  • Manipulative Bastard: Following his manipulation of Dan, Michael makes some comments about Charlie's sickness, which leads to Amenadiel finding out that Charlie is a normal human, causing him to fear all the vulnerabilities that that would include, leading him to freeze time. A feat that Amenadiel has never managed before, in an attempt to keep Charlie safe forever. He taunts Chloe by pointing out that Lucifer never replied to her love confession as well as his newfound invulnerability despite her presence, which leads her to believe that Lucifer might have never loved her at all. And last but not least, he promises Maze a soul, which, in addition to his previous manipulation of her, causes her to betray Lucifer. Add the separate issue of Ella being brokenhearted at Pete's betrayal, and by the end of the episode, nearly every single one of Lucifer's loved ones are either morally conflicted or have turned their backs on him.
  • Moment Killer: While Lucifer struggles to tell Chloe that he loves her, Amenediel (subconsciously) freezes time because of his fears for his son. Lucifer calls him out for the bad timing.
  • No-Sell: Lucifer regains his mojo, and is now also invulnerable in spite of Chloe being close to him.
  • Not Me This Time: After Chloe is kidnapped while investigating a new lead on the Whisper Killer's case, Lucifer spends the first half of the episode tracking down what she found out, believing that it will lead him to her. However after Pete is captured, he reveals that he genuinely doesn't know what happened to Chloe, and Lucifer realizes that her kidnapping had nothing to do with Pete. Cue Chloe waking up in a cage after being kidnapped by Michael.
  • "Not So Different" Remark: Pete claims that he and Ella have one thing in common: they both have a darkness inside themselves.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Michael sports this expression upon God personally showing up and halting his fight with Lucifer and Amenadiel.
    • Ella has this plastered on her face when she realizes that Pete's secret room contained lilies... the same flowers that the Whisperer used.
  • One Dialogue, Two Conversations: When Lucifer rescues Chloe, he promptly kisses her. Looking at this, Dan comments that he really cares for her, which Maze agrees with, stating that they're "freaking soulmates". While Dan is focused on the "mate" part, Maze focuses on the "soul" part, since she doesn't have one.
  • Red Herring: Pete didn't kidnap Chloe, Michael did.
  • Secret Room: Ella learns that Pete is the true killer when she stumbles upon a secret room accessed by a crawlspace, which contains lilies and the poison that he used for the murders.
  • Time Stands Still: Right as Lucifer is about to confess his love for Chloe, she suddenly freezes. When he leaves the room, he learns that time in the precinct is, to paraphrase Amenadiel, not just slowed down, but stopped.
  • Tranquil Fury:
    • Lucifer spends the duration of Chloe's kidnapping in a state of cold rage, intertwined with some bouts of actual anger.
    • Ella is this way, too, when confronting Pete, and especially when Pete shows zero empathy over the murders that he committed and admits that his nerdy and shy demeanor was a ruse to get her emotionally.
  • Wham Episode: Lucifer and Amenadiel's fight against Michael and Maze is broken up by God.
  • Wham Line: Three in quick succession at the very end:
God: That's enough! (thunder booms and a white light appears, shining upon Michael, Lucifer, and Amenadiel)
    Lucifer: Dad?
God: (appears with the light now shining behind him) Children, you know I hate it when you fight.
  • Wham Shot: Ella finding a secret room in Pete's place... that has lilies, revealing that he is the Whisper Killer.
