Recap / Lucifer (2016) S05E01 "Really Sad Devil Guy"

Go To

Lucifer toys with a murder victim while Chloe and Maze investigate his death. Meanwhile, Amenadiel cleans up Lux while Linda mothers Charlie.

Tropes present in the episode include:

  • All for Nothing: As it turns out Lee's murder is this. Given his hedonistic lifestyle, any money that was in his safe is theorized by his sister to have already been gambled away, meaning that his old crew was never going to get their money back.
  • Ambiguous Situation: It's unknown if Linda's claims that her child really is as much of a genius as she says are true. Ella is unconvinced, but Dan notes that Charlie laughing at only two months is pretty advanced.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Lee to Lucifer: "Whose Hell is this?"
  • A Day in the Limelight: Lee/"Mr. Said Out Bitch", a minor thief who got humiliated by Lucifer in previous episodes, gets expanded focus here as the murder victim of the episode.
  • Back for the Dead: Lee Garner (Mr. Said Out Bitch), who is murdered sometime before the events of the episode. He does, however, follow Lucifer around to identify his murderer.
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: Pulled when Amenadiel finds someone selling drugs in Lux.
Amenadiel: Lux is under new management. No one sells drugs in my place... without me getting a piece of the action.
    • It turns out he's trying to bust the kid's supplier, only to discover that there isn't one; the kid just swiped some prescription drugs from his family.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Lucifer saves Chloe and Meg just as they're about to be shot up. Although it quickly takes a twist with The Reveal a few minutes later.
  • The Blank: The demon Belios plays the role of Lee's killer during his Hell loop. Lee assumes they can just remove the ski mask and reveal the face of the person who killed him. Unfortunately it's not that easy. Since they don't know who killed him, when Lee removes the mask Belios' face is a complete blank.
  • Borrowed Biometric Bypass: Lee's murderers were intending to do this with the hand they cut off and his biometric safe in a storage unit.
  • Five-Second Foreshadowing: "Lucifer" casually strolling in to save Chloe from three armed gunmen without a care in the world, despite her presence making him mortal, hints the twist ending that it's not really him about half a minute before The Reveal.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: It becomes apparent that Maze has become this by the end of the episode, with her being rejected not just by Eve but also by Chloe thanks in part to their affections for said devil.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Lucifer bringing Lee to the root of his hell loop simply gives Lee enough ammunition to fire back and hurt Lucifer as well.
  • Mirror Character: By the end of the episode, the parallels between Lucifer and Lee as individuals who would rather torture themselves for eternity rather than disappointing the ones they love have become really apparent.
  • The One That Got Away: Both Lucifer and Chloe are struggling to cope with their separation. It's worse in Lucifer's case, since time in Hell is much faster than on Earth. Instead of two months, Lucifer has had to miss Chloe for thousands of years.
  • Punch-Clock Villain: Belios, the demon standing in for Lee's murderer, is just playing his role in the Hell Loop. Once Lucifer gives him the day off he wanders off with no fuss.
  • Replacement Goldfish:
    • Both Chloe and Lucifer attempt to invoke this trope; Chloe takes Maze on as her new partner, and Lucifer tries to get "Mr. Said Out Bitch" to replace Chloe as the detective.
    • Chloe theorizes that Maze viewed her as this in an attempt to fill the void after Eve left.
  • The Reveal: After Lucifer supposedly reunites with Chloe on Earth, we cut back to Hell, where Lucifer somberly notes that Chloe is fine without him coming back, revealing that whoever she's with, it's not Lucifer.
  • Springtime for Hitler: Chloe plans to lose big at the poker game, noting how "I never win." Guess who ends up with a great winning pile of chips (at least for a while).
  • Title Drop: Lee notes that Lucifer looks like a "really sad devil guy".
  • Wham Line: "So you're not going to go in there and save your lady friend?" showing us that the Lucifer who saved Chloe and Meg is not the one we've been following throughout the series.
  • Year Inside, Hour Outside: Thanks to the vastly faster time in Hell, Lucifer has spent thousands of years as its king, while back on Earth it's only been a few months.
