Recap / Lucifer (2016) S04E06 "Orgy Pants to Work"

Go To

Lucifer tries to balance his old hedonistic lifestyle with his new crime-solving one, while Amenadiel finds his sister Remiel has arrived on Earth.

Tropes present in the episode include:

  • Abusive Parents: Maze's mother, Lilith, is implied to be this. Maze claims that she tends to forget her own children and "wasn't mom of the year", which is why she really wants to take part in raising Linda's baby.
  • Apology Gift: On Linda's suggestion, Lucifer sends both Chloe and Eve packages as apologies for his behavior. The problem is, the packages are switched: Eve gets a printer printing apologies for Chloe, while Chloe gets a sex doll clearly meant for Eve.
Chloe: (sees the doll) Oh look, there's a card.
Dan: You really need a card to know who's that from?
  • At Least I Admit It: Julian claims that his father is A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing and no better than himself but at least Julian doesn't pretend to be something he's not.
  • Comically Missing the Point: Maze's first reaction at seeing Linda's baby bump is exclaiming that she is fat.
  • Cop Killer: Julian ends up shooting a cop who tries to arrest him, all because Lucifer decided to let him go. Then Julian has the gall to blame the murder on Lucifer.
  • Dramatic Irony: As usual, Dan's calling out of Lucifer involves saying the exact wrong thing, guaranteed to make everything worse, though only we the audience know that. Among other things his snarl of "You think you're the good guy, but you're not!" is exactly the push necessary to cause Lucifer to backslide into doling out unrestrained punishment rather than trying to be better and handle things Chloe's way.
  • Eating the Eye Candy: Chloe checks out Lucifer even as she's asking him to Please Put Some Clothes On.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: Remiel reveals to Amenadiel that she has come to Earth because she has sensed the presence of a new celestial, which means that an angel has impregnated a human — but she, understandably, assumes it was Lucifer.
  • Fanservice: The scene where Lucifer and Ella strip.
  • Godiva Hair: Ella's long hair is used to cover her chest while at the nudist ranch.
  • Going Commando: Lucifer's "orgy pants" come sans underwear.
  • He Knows Too Much: Julian killed Gary when he finds out about his human trafficking.
  • Human Traffickers: Julian McCaffrey secretly runs a ring of human trafficking.
  • It's All My Fault: Lucifer blames himself for the cop's death, since rather than dealing out his brand of vigilante punishment on Julian he decided to let the police take care of him, not realizing Julian would simply shoot the first cop he came across.
  • Lamaze Class: Linda attends one at Amenadiel's suggestion but he gets distracted by Remiel and can't make it. Maze ends up going instead and ends up munching on snacks during a birthing video.
  • Naked People Are Funny: The scene at the nudist colony is Played for Laughs, especially when Lucifer and Ella start stripping right away so they can infiltrate it. And how much nudity can you get away with on Netflix? A lot...admittedly without actually showing any female breasts or anyone's genitals.
  • Never My Fault: Julian keeps coming up with excuses for the lives he's taken, outside factors that weren't in his control. He refuses to admit that the lives he's taken are because he took them.
    • Dan's continued animosity towards Lucifer has some shades of this. While he's right that Lucifer's made poor decisions and mistakes, he mostly seems to be blaming Lucifer for everything to avoid the self-blame that people who suffer loss typically undergo.
  • Not What It Looks Like: Chloe catches one suspect apparently in the process of kidnapping a woman. When Chloe intervenes, they reveal the man runs a business training people who travel to dangerous areas how to handle being kidnapped. The woman cheerfully reveals this is her third time going through the program.
  • A Party, Also Known as an Orgy: It appears that all of Lucifer's parties with Eve are this.
  • Please Put Some Clothes On: Chloe's reaction to seeing Lucifer and Ella in the nude.
  • Precision F-Strike:
Dan: You're a wrecking ball, and everything you touch turns to shit.
  • Riddle for the Ages: Whoever slipped a note in Lucifer's clothes to lead him to the Marigold ship is never revealed.
  • Scenery Censor: To the point of being an Overly Long Gag. The nudists' naughty bits are carefully concealed by strategically-placed drinks, furniture, and once even a spinning fan.
  • Shameless Fanservice Guy: And gal. Lucifer and Ella ditch their clothes without a second thought when they have to investigate a nudist resort. Ella states that stripping nude at a nudist colony has always been a goal in her bucket list.
  • Shout-Out: Amenadiel asks Remiel if she decided to take a break from Castiel singing. A version of the angel Castiel is a main character in Supernatural.
  • Tempting Fate: Dan is complaining about Lucifer, but Chloe insists that when it comes to work he has it covered. Then he turns up with his ass uncovered.
  • Then Let Me Be Evil: Dan's rebuke causes Lucifer to think that he can never be someone other than the Devil, and that justice, no matter how harsh, is really the right answer. Coupled by Eve's suggestions, he finally gives in to his darker side by hunting Julian down and breaking his spine.
  • The One That Got Away: According to Eve, Adam never moved on from his first wife, "stupid perfect Lilith."
  • Time Skip: Several months have passed since Maze went off bounty-hunting after the events of "Expire Erect". Linda is heavily pregnant, Eve has wholeheartedly embraced sex and debauchery as a new lifestyle, and Lucifer's work with the LAPD is suffering due to him falling back on old habits.
  • Title Drop: As if showing up late to a crime scene wasn't enough, Lucifer shows up wearing assless pants. Which he then covers up with copious amounts of evidence tape.
Lucifer: Oh. Oh dear. I've worn my orgy pants to work, haven't I?
  • Waking Non Sequitur: "Fetch me the goat!!"
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Dan gives one to Lucifer after the latter let Julian get away and got a cop killed.
