Recap / Lucifer (2016) S03E20 "The Angel of San Bernadino"

Go To

A masked man is about to kill a woman, when a bright light appears and an angel swoops in to her rescue.

Tropes present in this episode include:

  • Bread, Eggs, Breaded Eggs: Trying to come up with an explanation for the angel figurine in his bedroom, Lucifer suggests that it might be a housewarming gift, or a sex toy, or a housewarming gift sex toy.
  • Cassandra Truth: A sleep deprived and almost manic Lucifer tells Chloe that Pierce is the biblical Cain and he's only using her to further his goals; Chloe doesn't believe a word of it.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: "Why did you betray me, Mazikeen?"
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: The montage of all the crazy things Lucifer does to stay awake includes gems such as sniffing a mountain of cocaine, guzzling down energy drinks, having a woman slap him over and over, taking part in Fight Club-esque brawls, obsessively cleaning his penthouse while dressed in a slutty maid's outfit, playing with a pierot figurine while dressed in a matching costume, etc...
  • Gaslighting: Lucifer realizes that Pierce has been doing this to him by creating the angel of San Bernandino in order to keep him away from Chloe. He's half-right; it was Maze's idea.
  • Heel Realization: Charlotte has one after she thinks she's found a way to avoid going to Hell again; without the threat of punishment, she reverts to her old self and acts even worse in some ways. A horrified Charlotte realizes she hasn't changed all that much after all.
  • If You Ever Do Anything to Hurt Her...: Lucifer skips past the warning and goes straight to beating the crap out of Pierce when the latter breaks Chloe's heart.
  • In Love with the Mark: Pierce wanted to make Chloe fall in love with him in order to break his curse. He almost succeeds, but he ends up falling for her as well and breaking up with her because he can't bear to use her anymore.
  • The Insomniac: Having stayed awake for an entire week due to fear of being the angel of San Bernandino, Lucifer ends up looking like something the cat dragged in from the pavement.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: Maze is 100% right when she points out why her plan to distract Lucifer worked.
Maze: I know the only thing that matters to you more than Chloe: You. Easiest way to spin you around is to delve into those Daddy issues. "I can't get rid of my wings! Daddy's controlling me! Wah. Wah. Wah."
  • Making Love in All the Wrong Places:
    • Chloe and Pierce retreat to the evidence locker in the middle of the precinct. It's a wonder only Ella caught on to what they were doing.
    • A completely hammered Charlotte suggests that Dan go to the closet in the diner and take his clothes off, and she'll follow a little later and do the same.
  • Mr. Fanservice:
  • Naked People Are Funny: A random restaurant patron walks in on a buck-naked Dan.
Charlotte: (grimaces and mouths "I'm sorry")
  • One Dialogue, Two Conversations: Pierce says "it's not worth it" just when Chloe is about to confess her feelings for him. He means that tricking her to break his curse is not worth it because he is genuinely starting to fall in love with her, but naturally, Chloe interprets this as Pierce admitting that she is not worth his affection and is understandably heartbroken.
  • Pet the Dog: Charlotte is taking her presumed Get Out of Hell Free card as an excuse to go around just being mean to other people. When she gets to Ella, she starts to say something, hesitates, and can only manage "You're pretty great, actually."
  • Real Dreams are Weirder: Brought up during Lucifer's latest counseling session.
Linda: You've been complaining about having weird dreams lately. Including one where you couldn't control your wings.
Lucifer: I've also dreamt I was king of the centaur people. Doesn't mean I'm gonna start wearing horseshoes.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Maze taunts Lucifer by saying that all she had to do to manipulate him was play on his daddy issues.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Lucifer's red glare reappears when he's questioning the murderer.
  • Right Through the Wall: Pierce and Chloe have a quickie in the evidence storage.
Ella: (sees bottles falling off the shelves) Yeah, girl! Get some!
  • Scenery Censor: A musical instrument is the only thing that manages to preserve Dan's modesty.
  • Screw the Rules, I Have Connections!: After Lucifer revealed his angelic nature to her, causing her to realize she really was in Hell for a time, Charlotte took this as a get-out-of-Hell-free card to do anything she wanted and avoid divine punishment for it because Lucifer and Amenadiel would get her out of it. Amenadiel has to remind her that neither of the two of them is in good standing with Heaven and God.
  • Shout-Out: Lucifer watches Bones, a show that once aired on the same channel. He thinks it's riveting stuff.
Lucifer: (to Chloe) It's like a documentary of us!
  • That Came Out Wrong: Chloe says that she and Pierce came... drove together.
  • There Was a Door: Lucifer makes a suitably dramatic entrance by smashing one of Pierce's floor-to-ceiling windows with a kick.
  • Thousand-Yard Stare: Chloe has one after Pierce breaks up with her.
  • Unstoppable Rage: Lucifer keeps it together until Trixie opens the door for him and he sees Chloe staring at nothing. Then he drives to Pierce's house, kicks down a window pane, and all bets are off.
  • Wham Shot: At the very end, while beating up Pierce, Lucifer sees that the mark on Pierce's arm is gone.
  • Your Approval Fills Me with Shame: Zigzagged. Maze compliments Pierce on the "ruthlessness" of his plan, saying that getting Chloe to fall in love with him only for him to die right after and thus break her heart is pretty cruel— and coming from a demon, that means something. Pierce retorts that he doesn't care who he has to hurt as long as he can finally die. Later, however, when Chloe is about to drop the L-bomb, Pierce realizes that he can't actually go through with it.
Pierce: I couldn't hurt [Chloe] like that.
Lucifer: (seething) Well, you hurt her plenty.
