Recap / Lucifer (2016) S02E07 "My Little Monkey"

Go To

With Chloe distracted by the man she holds responsible for the death of her father in the line of duty being granted a temporary leave from his jail sentence, Lucifer decides to try and make amends for his previous actions (see "Monster") by attempting to be a model crime-solver by emulating Dan.

Tropes present in this episode include:

  • Brief Accent Imitation: Lucifer imitates Dan's American accent for a bit. Later, Dan imitates Lucifer's British one.
  • Cruel Mercy: After Maze captures Perry Smith, Chloe has the chance to do anything she wants to him as revenge for him killing her father. She ultimately decides to simply send him to the prison he was the warden of, with all the inmates he put in there. Perry ends up begging her not to, saying he will give her anything, to no avail.
  • Eating the Eye Candy: Lucifer openly admires Dan's physique when they are naked at the spa, saying "divorce becomes you detective."
  • French Maid: Maze is seen in a sexy maid outfit when she applies to be a "topless maid."
  • He Knows Too Much:
    • Joe Fields is shot to prevent him from revealing the truth that he's the fall guy.
    • John Decker was killed because he stumbled onto Perry Smith's corruption.
  • I Just Want to Be You: Lucifer tries to be more like Dan, someone boring and with a simple life. Ironically, Dan is revealed to want to be more like Lucifer: rich, carefree, living in the moment.
  • Improv Comedy Is Inane: Lucifer follows Dan and discovers - to his horror - that he has joined an improv club. Lucifer follows him in just in time to see Dan do an improvised scene imitating Lucifer, and the two have a confrontation that becomes a heart-to-heart where they realise neither of them has it as figured out as the other assumed.
Lucifer: Oh, no, no. Not this. Better a snuff movie, a Human Centipede, clown porn, but not improv!
  • Laser-Guided Karma: Chloe tells Perry Smith he'll be sent to the prison he, up until now, wardened over.
  • Mr. Fanservice: Both Lucifer and Dan appear in just towels at a Russian bathhouse.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Tina Fields shows up at Chloe's house and holds her at gunpoint, threatening to kill her for murdering Joe Fields. When Trixie calls out for her mother Tina snaps out of her rage and lets Chloe take the gun away from her.
  • Offscreen Teleportation: Subverted when Maze suddenly appears in Linda's office despite the locked door. When Linda asks her if she can teleport Maze just points out that the window was open.
  • Portmanteau: Lucifer, while trying to emulate Dan in this episode, refers to Dan and him as "LuciDan" and/or "DouchIfer"
  • Psychotic Smirk: Joe Fields, the man who killed John Decker, smiles at Chloe in a way that creeps her out. But turns out he actually was smiling at the Warden because he's getting out of the deal.
  • Public Bathhouse Scene: Lucifer and Dan meet Russian Mafia boss Boris in a bathhouse, towels are seen on everyone for modesty, although they are not common in such a bathhouse.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Tina Fields decides to murder Chloe after her father is killed. Fortunately, Chloe manages to disarm her (and decides to not arrest her).
  • The Scapegoat: Joe Fields didn't kill Chloe's father; he was just the fall guy. In fact, Boris specializes in finding scapegoats for people's crimes.
  • Spotting the Thread: Lucifer ends up making a breakthrough in the case when he asks Chloe something that has been bothering him the whole time. If Joe Fields didn't kill Chloe's dad, why did he smile at her outside the prison? It turns out to be because he wasn't smiling at her, but the warden Perry Smith.
  • That Came Out Wrong: Lucifer runs into this when informing Chloe that he's going to be following Dan around.
Lucifer: I'm going to learn how to Douche... I may have to rephrase that one.
  • Troll: Dan naturally assumes Lucifer's attempt to copy him is this, since if pretty much anyone else did it, it would be. It's not until Lucifer confronts him at the Improv, clearly honestly upset at Dan's mockery of him in turn, that Dan realizes he was sincerely trying to figure out how to be helpful and wanted.
  • Wardens Are Evil: Petty Smith, Deputy Warden of the prison where the man convicted of Chloe's father's murder is held, turns out to be corrupt and making deals with his inmates. He facilitated a real murderer going off scott-free for over a decade.
  • You Have Outlived Your Usefulness: Perry Smith killed Joe Fields when he wanted out of the deal to see his granddaughter.
