Recap / Little Princess S 2 E 8 I Dont Want To Leave Home

Go To

The Princess jumps out at the narrator, startling him. Then, she startles the General and the Maid because she finds making people jump funny. The narrator asks the Princess who she will surprise next, and she decides to hide behind the curtain. However, she overhears the King and Queen having a conversation about her leaving the castle.

She doesn't want to do so, and sits sadly on her bed. She wonders if they're kicking her out because of a time she and the Queen stole the Chef's jelly but decides that can't be the case. She then wonders if it could be because of the time she used the King's best shoes as toy boats, but then realises that the King was happy in the end because he got some new, boat-shaped shoes.

At lunch, the Princess tells her parents that she loves it at home and doesn't want to leave. The King says that "it's all arranged" and the royal parents reveal that Great-Auntie will be taking her away in the afternoon. The Princess asks her parents if her friends and pets can come with her, but the Queen says that Great-Auntie doesn't want them.

The Princess crankily leaves the table and goes outside to stew. The General sees her and she explains that she's "fed up" because her parents are sending her to Great Auntie's. The General thinks this is good news, but she explains that she doesn't want to go. The Maid then calls the Princess to pack but she runs away.

She tries hiding behind the Admiral, but the Maid sees her and makes her come out and pack. She packs a family photo, a hamper of food, her tricycle, and a bunch of other things too. When the Princess and Maid have trouble packing her suitcase, the Princess maintains that if she can't take it all, she's not going, and asks the Maid if she'll miss her.

At the front door, the General gives the Princess a toy soldier, the Admiral gives her a boat, and the pets try to ride in the food hamper but get caught. The Princess is just about ready to cry when the King reveals that she'll be back tomorrow and it's only a sleepover. Great-Auntie arrives, and she and the Princess walk away.

The adults and pets mope around the house, then when the Princess comes back, she startles the King and Queen and everyone cheers up.

This episode provides examples of

  • Artistic License – Biology: The pets kiss, even though cats and dogs express affection by licking and (with cats) nuzzling, and likely wouldn't physically be able to kiss.
  • Howl of Sorrow: Scruff often follows the Princess around mournfully howling in this episode.
  • Irony: The toy boat that the Admiral gives the Princess to remember him by is called HMS: Forgetful.
  • Left the Background Music On: When the Princess is moping on her bed, Puss plays the background music on a harmonica.
  • Not So Above It All: The Queen may be the sanest member of the cast next to the Maid, yet she still stole some jelly in the past.
  • Out-of-Context Eavesdropping: The Princess hears the King and Queen say that she'll be leaving the castle and thinks she'll be leaving forever, but it turns out to only be for a sleepover.
  • Platonic Kissing: The pets kiss when Great Auntie arrives.
  • Serious Business: A lot of the characters act as though the Princess really is leaving forever:
    • When she departs the General talks about how the castle "won't be the same", the Admiral gives her a toy boat to "remember him by", and the King and General actually cry.
    • Scruff frequently follows her around howling, and then later both he and Puss try to come with her and hug her despondently when they can't.
    • When she's actually away, the adults and pets mope.
  • Shared Family Quirks: This episode reveals that Great-Auntie also owns a teddy bear named Gilbert.
  • Speak in Unison: When the Princess's adult friends tell her and Great-Auntie to have a great time, they say, "We will!" in unison.
  • Tempting Fate:
    • The narrator says that it's a shame the Princess isn't here, then she jumps out at him.
    • The Chef says that the Princess ate all his jelly, then he sees that the Queen actually ate some too.
  • Too Unhappy to Be Hungry: When the King and Queen tell the Princess that her pets can't come with her, she becomes sulky and doesn't finish her lunch.
