Tropes associated with this episode:

  • The Bus Came Back: This episode marks the first appearance of the Edwards family (sans Carl, who is only mentioned) in nearly 2 1/2 years.
  • Death Seeker: What Isaiah becomes after being crippled. When Charles stops him from shooting himself and takes away his gun, he declares he's going to stay there in the woods, sitting and waiting until he dies of dehydratation and hunger or from some wild animal attack.
  • Hunting "Accident": Literally – although Charles stages one to get a suicidal Mr. Edwards to get his mind off himself and help someone else.
  • Interrupted Suicide: Charles interferes on Mr. Edwards' attempt to shoot himself by kicking the gun away before it goes off.
  • Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: When a desperate Charles sees that nothing he says will snap Isaiah out of his suicidal state, he kneels and prays for a sign from God to help him. Then a buck shows up and Charles, not being in the mood to hunt anymore, tries to scare it away by throwing a little rock, and it doesn't move. Then he shoots up to scare the animal, and it still stands there. He thinks for a moment and concludes this is God's sign and shoots the buck, using its blood to stage a hunting accident as part of a plan to help Mr. Edwards out of his suicidal state, by convincing him to overcome his handiccap and restore his will to live.
  • Out-of-Character Alert: Mr. Edwards leaves his bedroom for the first time, seemingly cheerful and excited to go hunting. Everyone is excited and assumes Charles and Laura's visit helped him overcome his situation, but in fact, it's because he's becoming suicidal.
  • Papa Wolf: Isaiah injured himself while saving his daughter Alicia from being crushed by a falling tree.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Carl's absence is explained because Isaiah's aggresively depressed state alienated to the point of leaving his house.
  • Stay in the Kitchen: Although Laura is allowed to follow Charles and Isaiah during the hunting trip, she's delegated to cooking for them. Lampshaded by her line: "No matter where we go, that's always where they keep us... in the kitchen".
