Tropes associated with this episode:

  • Badass Preacher: Preacher Bob, the informal preacher charged with the funeral services and prayers at the mining camp seems an unassuming fellow, but when one of the members is caught stealing gold from a widow and tries to bully his way out, the preacher pulls out a gun and orders him to return the gold and pack his things to leave.
  • Baddie Flattery: Horace tries to make an advance on Caroline, who sends him off first with a slap and then by threatening him with a torch. He reacts by saying he likes women with "spunk in them".
  • A Day in the Limelight: To Caroline, who gets a sole adventure as she and Dr. Baker help victims of an influenza outbreak at the mining's camp where her pregnant friend Louisa is living with her husband.
  • Death by Childbirth: Caroline's friend dies shortly after giving birth. Also, this is one of several episodes throughout the series to deal with preeclampsia and other pregnancy-related illnesses that often resulted in death, particularly in the 1800s.
  • Domestic Abuse: Caroline's friend is the victim of this by her husband Horace, who neglects his pregnant wife, forcing her to work during her pregnancy and openly says he doesn't care if she loses this baby after she lost other pregnancies. Tragically, said abuse contributes to her dying in childbirth and Horace doesn't even bother to wait, just running away with his gold shortly before she dies.
  • Keep the Reward: Hinted at but averted when the campers offer Dr. Baker a small sack of gold for his services. He seems ready to decline, but the Preacher Bob argues that, as a doctor, he could make good use of that money to tend other people, convincing Dr. Baker to accept the gold.
  • The Plague: An Influenza outbreak at a mining's camp where Caroline's old friend Louisa is living with her husband, and she writes Caroline asking for her help and a doctor.
  • Switched at Birth: A heroic example. After Louisa dies in birth, leaving a baby whose father doesn't want him and ran away, Caroline sees another couple, whose baby died but they don't know yet, and tries to persuade Dr. Baker to let them think her friend's baby is theirs so that he can be raised by loving parents. Dr. Baker insists that they can't but then complies once the husband sees Louisa's baby and thinks it's his. He and his wife never learn that their real baby was a stillborn.
