Tropes associated with this episode:

  • Blame the Paramour: When they discover Charles's visits to Widow Thurmond's house and assume they are having an affair, Mary and Laura keep comparing her to a spider who trapped their Pa, as if the alleged affair were entirely her doing.
  • Mistaken for Cheating: Laura and Mary think Charles keeps going in and out of a beautiful widow's house because he's having an affair with her. In fact, he was making jobs for her in secret to buy Caroline a new set of china, and making up about doing jobs somewhere else.
  • Neutral Female: Discussed when Laura expresses that if she were Caroline, she'd go and punch Widow Thurmond in the stomach, and when Mary insists Ctheir mother wouldn't do that and Laura says that's what Charles would do to any man who tried seducing Caroline, Mary says that that men are supposed to fight for love, not women.
  • What Happened to the Mouse?: An object example. Laura's voiceover informs that after everything was cleared, they came to use the set of china in every meal. After this episode, however, they continued to use the same plates as usual and the china was never seen again.
  • You Called Me "X"; It Must Be Serious: When Mrs. Oleson shares her knowledge about Charles going in and out of Widow Thurmond's house with Caroline, who already knows about it and is starting to get suspicious, a fed-up Caroline snaps at her when the former says "if I were you", and says "Well, but you're not me, Harriet" and reassures that she trusts Charles completely before leaving the Mercantile.
