Tropes associated with this episode:

  • Alpha Bitch: Although this would be far more expanded in later episodes, this is just the template for Nellie Oleson's character for the first six years of the series.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Willie's first appearance involves him joining the boys in making fun of the newcoming Ingalls girls as the arrive for school for the first time, and Nellie's is staring coldly at them and calling them "country girls" in a clipped voice.
  • Never Learned to Read: Laura, about age eight, confides to Miss Beadle on her first day of school that she has not yet learned to read. She is later seen making progress.
  • New Transfer Student: Mary and Laura attend Walnut Grove School for the first time. Even though they are regulars, they are the newcomers to the school.
  • Not Drawn to Scale: The yardage of fabric needed for an adult's dress would not be sufficient to repurpose into two smaller dresses for children even in whole condition; already cut for the original pattern and mostly assembled, the hopelessness would be even more obvious, especially to an experienced seamstress like Caroline.
  • Tempting Fate: Laura explains to Mr. Oleson that Pa has a strict "cash on the barrel" policy for the family's spending. Mr. Oleson praises the wisdom of that strategy but remarks that many people have a hard time sticking to it; indeed, the Ingalls family will find itself tight on funds and incurring significant debt (including seeking credit at Oleson's Mercantile itself) many a time.
