Recap / Leverage: Redemption S 2 E 3 "The Tournament Job"

Go To

The team infiltrates an e-sports tournament to take down a ruthless team owner who is physically and mentally abusing his players.

Tropes stolen in this job:

  • Cheaters Never Prosper: Kyle Fury's backstory has him kicked out of professional football after being caught taking performance enhancing drugs; he's now dosing his e-sports team Samurai Midnight so they will play longer at the cost of their physical and mental wellbeing. The team takes advantage of this tendency to take shortcuts and sets him up to be caught using a program that controls the avatars of both teams.
  • Continuity Nod: As in "The Queen's Gambit Job" a few years agonote , Eliot is dismayed that competitive video games are considered a sport. However, he changes his mind by the end of the episode.
  • Engineered Public Confession: Despite Kyle's precautions, Team Leverage is able to get footage of him doing incriminating activities, as well as a Motive Rant where he admits to his crimes. They show it during the climax of the tournament, ruining his reputation.
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Kyle gets a scar on the bridge of his nose when Breanna clouts him with the champagne bottle.
  • Highly-Visible Ninja: Parker lampshades the "Ninja Run" meme is this since it defeats the purpose of being a ninja who are meant to be stealthy.
  • It Was with You All Along: A flashback shows a conversation between Tam and Eliot where the former claimed that the pills Kyle's been force feeding them is helping is continued. Eliot reveals that they're actually playing better because he switched those pills out with placebos and the smoothies he's been giving the team have been detoxing out the crap that was already in their system.
  • Made of Iron: Played straight with Kyle's henchman Brock, who takes a lot of punishment from Eliot before finally succumbing. Defied with Kyle himself, who's knocked out when Breanna hits him with a champagne bottle.
  • Promoted Fanboy: Invoked Trope with Harry, who goes from watching the video game tournaments to producing and announcing one.
  • Shout-Out:
    • Several references are made to the The Terminator; Kyle's bodyguard Brock is called a "cybernetic organism" in reference to his build, Parker does a Schwarzenegger-like accent a couple of times, and in the end when she knocks out the Mark with a t-shirt cannon, Parker's outfit involves Sarah Conner's from the second film.
    • Both Sophie and Breanna mention "Evo Moment #37," which is the community name for a famous 2004 competitive match in Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike.
    • Tam’s nickname is “River”, a reference to Firefly.
  • Stealth Hi/Bye: Parker "teleports" in and out via stealth while her teammates are talking. Sophie is used to it. Harry isn't.
  • Xanatos Gambit: Kyle does this when he takes advantage of the team's program for himself: after making several large bets that his team Samurai Midnight, who's the favorite, will lose, he's set to make out like a bandit. Either they'll lose and Kyle will make a criminal amount of money, dump the team, and begins a new one restarting the cycle of abuse or they'll win, making him the owner of a championship team and make him rich that way. The one thing he doesn't account for is Team Leverage exposing him publicly in a way that protects Samurai Midnight while laying bare his cheating and abuse.
