Recap / Legacies S1E14 "Let's Just Finish the Dance"

Go To

The school is hosting the annual Miss Mystic Falls Pageant. Lizzie drops out when she learns that one of the judges is biased against her and decides to groom Hope for victory. Hope's ex Roman returns, causing Landon to feel jealous. MG's mom comes to the school with the intention of transferring him to another school. Someone is turning people into statues.

  • Amicable Exes: Hope and Roman, much to Landon's consternation. Roman admits to Landon that he still has feelings for Hope and always will, but that she would never be with him again. When Landon storms out during the pageant after learning the truth about his mother, Roman steps in to escort Hope to the dance floor and to keep her from having an episode.
  • Beauty Contest: The Salvatore School is chosen as the host of the annual Miss Mystic Falls Pageant. While Lizzie hopes to win like her mom, the presence of Dana's mother as one of the judges forces her to adjust and work on getting Hope declared the winner instead. Josie just goes along with deliberately falling and taking out a competitor, much to Penelope's chagrin, who is annoyed that Josie is once again doing what Lizzie wants rather than what she herself wants. Hope ends up winning. Naturally, being a feminist, Penelope is firmly against this patriarchal tradition.
  • Dare to Be Badass: Apparently, this has been the motivation behind all of Penelope's scheming. She saw that Josie was always in Lizzie's shadow and wanted her to shine, but Josie always seemed to sabotage herself. One of the reasons Penelope is leaving is because she's tired of seeing Josie resign herself to the role of her sister's sidekick again and again.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: After Josie's revelation two episodes prior, Lizzie is much nicer to Hope. She even recognizes when Hope starts having episodes and coaches her on how to deal with them. When she sees Hope about to blow during the pageant, she hugs her and tells her to cry it out, which Hope does.
  • Do Not Call Me "Paul": MG tells his mom not to call him Milton.
  • Hope Spot: MG saves Landon from being kidnapped by the Gorgon and taken to Triad. Then Landon is kidnapped by MG's mom, who turns out to be working for Triad.
  • Internal Reveal:
    • Penelope tells Landon that Hope met his mother but didn't tell him. After getting confirmation from Hope, he storms out.
    • Penelope hands Josie a journal that includes information on the Merge.
  • Medusa: The girl MG meets turns out to be a Gorgon, although her abilities only work on humans (at the very least, vampires and Landon are immune).
  • Neck Snap: When her stone gaze fails to work on MG, the Gorgon uses her snake hair to snap MG's neck, although she knows he'll heal in a matter of minutes, so it's more like a knockout blow.
  • Put on the Bus: Penelope leaves the school, as her parents are moving to Belgium. She'll go to a witch-only school there instead.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Josie finally snaps and tells Lizzie exactly how she feels about being sidelined during the pageant.
  • The Reveal: The pageant dress that Lizzie gives Hope was apparently a gift from Klaus to their mother (Caroline). When Hope learns this, she bursts into cathartic tears.
  • Right Hand Versus Left Hand: The Gorgon turns MG's mom to stone, unaware that the latter is working for Triad, the same organization that forcibly recruited her to kidnap Landon.
  • Spit Take: Penelope does this when Landon says that "if there's one thing I've learned from Hope, it's that honesty is the best policy."
  • Taken for Granite: MG's mom and Alaric are turned to stone by the Gorgon. They're both fine after the Gorgon reverses the effects.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: Apparently, a Gorgon can be disabled by ringing a bell three times. MG admits the only other alternative would be to take the Gorgon's head, but he'd rather not murder anyone else, given what happened in the previous episode.
  • Wham Shot: MG's mom is working for Triad.
  • Wizarding School: Apparently, there's a witch-only school in Belgium.
