Recap / Law & Order: Special Victims Unit S8 E7 "Underbelly"

Go To

Written By Amanda Green

Directed By Jonathan Kaplan

A paw print tattoo is found on the lower back of a young teenage girl, leading detectives to Broder House, a foster home for young girls. There it is learned that the victim was one of three dead girls who had ended up as a prostitute for a man named Victor. To catch him, the detectives work to convince Victor's underage girlfriend Belinda to testify against him, with assistance from future recurring character Sister Peg.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Abusive Parents: The first victim's mother in spades. She first had her daughter taken from her due to being an addict. She took her back after claiming to get clean (ripping her away from her loving, supportive foster mother in the process), only to give her back to CPS after her daughter tells her her boyfriend sexually abused her (she refused to believe her or throw her boyfriend out). When she finds out about her daughter's murder, she couldn't care less—much to Beck's disgust.
  • Asshole Victim: Beck is forced to gun Victor Bodine to death. Considering how despicable of a human being Bodine was throughout the episode, no one would say he didn't had it coming.
  • Bald of Evil: Victor Bodine, who is an Ephebophile and Domestic Abuser.
  • The Big Damn Kiss: Stabler and Beck after having a few drinks.
  • The Bus Came Back: Sister Peg returns after last appearing in Season 6.
  • Celebrity Paradox: Julia Roberts was name-dropped by Belinda in one scene. The actress guest starred in the parent series. She was also in a high profile relationship with Benjamin Bratt (who played regular Ray Curtis on the same show), as well as the co-lead of Runaway Bride which also starred Christopher Meloni himself.
  • Do Not Do This Cool Thing: In-Universe. Belinda got the idea that prostitution is glamorous and exciting from watching Pretty Woman over and over.
  • Greed: In addition to her other loathsome qualities, the first victim's mother shows her greedy side by asking if she has a good case for a lawsuit against the group home her daughter was sent to if they were responsible for her death. Beck is understandably repulsed.
  • Hands-Off Parenting: The mother of the very first victim is such a terrible parental figure that she doesn't even seem bothered when one of her charges almost got run over by a car. Beck chews her out on it.
  • Out of Focus: Benson turns up for two scenes before exiting (Mariska Hargitay is still on maternity leave).
  • Outliving One's Offspring: Elliot and Dani interview the mother of the first victim, who doesn't give a single fuck that her daughter was killed.
  • Pædo Hunt: The episode centers on underage prostitutes, so gunning after their pimp(s) and clients is obviously the resolution.
  • Parental Neglect: The mother of the very first victim only cares about two things; herself and money. Her children's well-being be damned.
  • Ship Tease: Olivia has a jealous look seeing Eliot and Dani working well together.
  • Stockholm Syndrome: Belinda becomes so attached to Victor Bodine despite his shitty treatment of her, believing that he's the only one who will ever care for her.
  • Would Hit a Girl: Victor has no qualms about physically assaulting his prostitutes. He also brutally beats Sister Peg when kidnapping Belinda.
