Stabler puts his career on the line when he goes too far in investigating the story of an attack on a young woman's (Emily VanCamp) parents that left her and her brother seemingly traumatized.

Tropes:
- Blatant Lies: When Charlotte made a list of those in the party with her, Stabler and Benson begin interviewing the 4 teens. However, they all tell the two Detectives that they were doing mundane things like baby sitting and studying while sporting the most unconvincing smile of innocence ever. Their stories were picked apart and they were forced to tell the truth.
- Bungled Suicide: Charlotte breaks the mirror, slicing her wrist in the process. She survives, however.
- Half Way Plot Switch: Initially about Mrs. Truex's murder, the second half becomes about Police Brutality after Stabler is falsely accused of beating a suspect to death.
- Mistaken for Murderer: Initially, the evidence showed Charlotte murdered her mother. Turns out, it was her boyfriend. Then, Stabler tries to arrest said boyfriend, but he and Stabler get into an altercation and he dies from a heart condition. Stabler was blamed because the evidence initially showed that it was a homicide. He was eventually cleared of any wrongdoing.
- My God, What Have I Done?: Charlotte attempts suicide after being convinced that she killed her mother.
- Rage Against the Reflection: An epic one courtesy of Charlotte Truex. After SVU show her evidence that she might have killed her mother, the realization horrifies her so much that she punches the interogation room window
and cuts herself.
