Recap / Law & Order S5 E22 "Switch"

Go To

At the Amsterdam clinic, a janitor is showing the ropes to a new hire when he stumbles across the body of a psychiatrist in her office. Dr. Lillian Hampton has been murdered. Logan and Briscoe check her schedule. Her last appointment was with a young woman, Megan Nelson, at 7 p.m., but the clinic director tells the detectives about hearing a male voice coming from the doctor's office around 8:00. The detectives go talk to Megan, who is very upset since the doctor helped her tremendously. She mentions seeing a guy in the parking lot.

He turns out to be the doctor's ex, who had stopped by to drop off his alimony check. His alibi (that he was on the phone with his girlfriend the whole time and never left the car) checks out. Two sets of prints are found: Edward Brennig (attacking a police officer) and Paul White (felonious assault). The former claims to have been watching Court Tv at the time of the murder and explains away his prints with his job filling in at the maintenance company. Briscoe and Logan talk to White, who also has an alibi that checks out.

Next, they check her voice mails, including one from her fitness club, which doesn't match a gym bag found at the scene or the swipe card. The card belongs to Bobby Walker. The detectives go to the address and they find Megan, who tells them that she is "Bobby".

Megan explains that the doctor diagnosed her with Multiple Personality Disordernote  and was Helping her reintegrate her other personalities, "Bobby" and "Nancy". Megan also says that when her other personalities are in control, she has no memory what they do.

The detectives talk to Megan's landlord who tells them that she asked him to call the cops if her father came around. Then they talk to Mr. Nelson, who complains about the doctor making his daughter crazy.

Tropes in this episode:

  • Berserk Button: Paul White's charges for felonious assault are the result of him shoving someone who looked at his cat funny.
  • Bludgeoned to Death: How Dr. Hampton was killed; the weapon was an award she received for her work.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: Paul White's cat Alex, according to him. He claims that Alex was very upset with the inefficiency at the outpatient pharmacy the night of the crime. Lucky for him, the orderly who got scratched by Alex can validate his alibi.
  • Multi-Gendered Split Personalities: Megan's alters include Bobby, a protector, and Nancy, who finally reveals to having killed the doctor.
  • Wham Line: "He's in here. I'm Bobby."
