Hank goes blind after catching his mother and her Jewish boyfriend having sex in the kitchen.

Tropes in the episode

  • Alter Kocker: Gary Kasner has a Jewish accent and a unique way of speaking where he flips the order of certain words (Ex: Saying "You I like" instead of "I like you".) Bobby finds it amusing and starts talking like that as well.
  • Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Both Tilly and Gary manage to embarrass Hank (even though Gary isn't his dad). Tilly holds Hank's hand with both her hands and Gary hugs him, naturally making Hank uneasy.
  • Bait-and-Switch: When Hank introduces Cotton to Gary, Cotton shouts "Kasner?!" as if he's offended by Gary being Jewish. However, he immediately follows up by wishing Gary a Happy Hanukkah and mentions one of his platoon mates in Japan was Jewish as well.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Gary Kasner is a Nice Guy whom greatly loves Tilly, so he doesn't take it well when Cotton insults her, even threatening to kick his ass if he doesn't stop. And Cotton backs down!
  • Bullying the Disabled: Dale, Bill and Boomhauer make jokes and laughs at Hank's blindness, which doesn't amuse him at all.
  • Christmas Episode: The first one in the series, with Hank having to come to terms with his mother's new boyfriend.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Hank is incredibly uneasy over his mother Tilly going out with Gary, mainly due to the Domestic Abuse Cotton put her through. But after Gary drives Hank to Cotton's and he takes Hank to that faith-healing TV church to help him and he shares he loves Tilly, Hank warms up to him and manages to get his sight back.
  • The Dog Bites Back: After putting up with the guys' ribbing him on his blindness, Hank chases them off after getting back his vision with his stick, ready to kick ass.
  • Domestic Abuse: It's been established Cotton has treated Tilly badly, but he's no better to Didi, as he can be heard yelling at her to bring him eggnog as Hank and Gary leave.
  • Fake Faith Healer: With Hank up late at night and finding Gary on the couch (who attempts to talk to him about how he feels about Tilly), Hank gets incredibly uncomfortable and turns on the TV and watches one of these shows, claiming it's his favorite program to get out of talking to him. On TV, the faith healer struggles to help a guy with hiccups, even resorting to scaring him. Later on, Gary takes Hank to the healer to help him get his eyesight back, and with Hank finally coming to terms and accepting Gary, he gets it back before the healer ever touches him.
  • Fan Disservice: When Hank walks in on Tilly and Gary having sex, we get a few glimpses of wrinkly naked skin, with their own necklaces moving. If you think you need a Brain Bleach, just remember: Hank gets the worst of it.
  • Loophole Abuse: Gary isn't allowed to eat red meat after having bypass surgery. At one point he eats some leftover chicken-fried steak out of the Hills' fridge without knowing what it is. After Hank tells him, he says he's going to count it as chicken since he's still allowed to eat that.
  • Nice Jewish Boy: More like a nice Jewish Cool Old Guy, but Gary is a nice guy who loves Tilly and treats the Hills like family.
  • No Sympathy
    • Peggy initially has this reaction when Hank tells her he caught Tilly and Gary having sex, but she changes her tune when Hank tells her where they did it.
    • Cotton, unsurprisingly, isn't so willing to help guide Hank as he knocks his hand off Cotton's shoulder.
    • Bill, Dale, and Boomhauer mock Hank relentlessly because they know he can't see them, and thus won't be able to fight back. That is until his sight returns near the end and they try running away.
  • Oh, Crap!: Dale, Bill and Boomhauer have this reaction when they see Hank coming for them with a big stick and realize his sight is back.
  • Primal Scene: Happens to Hank when he sees his mother and her Jewish boyfriend having sex on the kitchen table, and is traumatized so bad by this, he goes blind.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: When Hank and Gary are visiting Cotton for Christmas dinner, Cotton starts to insult Tilly again, which is when Gary tells Cotton he was a terrible husband for treating such a kind woman like Tilly so horribly. Cotton decides to stop insulting her in front of Gary, but won't apologize for it.
  • Sleeping Single: Enforced by Hank. He doesn't like the idea of Tilly and Gary sleeping in the same room or even on the couch, both due to his old fashioned values and still being uncomfortable around Gary. Instead, he makes Gary sleep on a cot in Bobby's room, and has Tilly sleep in the den with Luanne.
Tilly: Hank, don't tell me you're uncomfortable with the thought of me and Gary sleeping in the same room.
  • Special Guest: Carl Reiner as Gary Kasner and Tammy Wynette as Tilly Hill.
  • Temporary Blindness: Hank suffers this after walking in on Tilly and Gary having sex in the kitchen. It's only when he comes to accept Gary that he finally gets his sight back.
  • With Friends Like These...: After Hank looses his eyesight, Bill, Dale, and Boomhauer (whom Hank thankfully didn't tell the real reason he went blind) treat it as a big joke, mocking him at every opportunity. At the very end, when Hank returns with Gary, and his vision, from the faith healer, the guys still make fun of him for being blind, which is when Hank produces a stick and chases them down the alley.
