Recap / King Of The Hill S 13 E 18 Uh Oh Canada

Go To

Boomhauer vacations in Quebec and meets a beautiful French-Canadian girl. Meanwhile, a Canadian family irks Hank, and Hank doesn't think his neighbors from the North are so great.

Tropes:

  • Artistic License – History: Gordon's claims about Canadian inventions are mostly inaccurate:
    • He says Canadians invented penicillin, which isn't true as it was actually made by the Scottish physicist Alexander Fleming. While Fleming lived and worked in Nova Scotia for a time, he was working in the UK when he discovered penicillin.
    • Modern zippers were invented by the Swedish-American Gideon Sundback. While he owned a factory in Ontario that manufactured zippers, Sundback invented and patented the device while working in Meadville, Pennsylvania.
    • Zambonis were invented by Frank Zamboni, an Italian-American engineer from California with no connection to Canada.
  • Crass Canuck: The Huskins (with the exception of Ollie) are rude, condescending, and make all kinds of passive-aggressive insults and cover it up with a sickeningly sweet facade of fake niceness.
  • Jerkass: Both Gordon and his wife are this, taunting the Hills about Canada's superiority at every chance they get for no reason, calling the cops on them for a false noise complaint when the Hills push back after inviting them over and cowardly hiding behind their blinders when they're inside and claiming it to be a cultural misunderstanding when they didn't just tell the Hills to turn down the music first when confronted about it later.
  • Pet the Dog: Despite often being a Bad Boss and Corrupt Corporate Executive, Buck Strictland is the one who bails Hank out of jail and even hires his own lawyer to make that happen.
  • The Reveal: Boomhauer's first name is revealed in this episode. It's Jeff. This was most likely done since the show was two episodes away from ending.
  • Token Good Teammate: Doubles with Children Are Innocent, as Ollie, Gordon and Morine’s son, is the only likable Huskin as he manages to get along quite well with Bobby and doesn't insult the Hills or their neighbors. However he mostly stays in the background.
  • Truth in Television: Although exaggerated with a cop saying "May God have mercy on his soul." to Gordon when he's stuck in jail for drunk driving with nobody to bail him out. It is far from uncommon for foreign travelers, like Gordon, to be detained by other countries for indefinite periods of time.
  • Ungrateful Bastard: The guys sacrifice their outdoor beer maker to get Gordon out of jail, but rather than thank them, Gordon just insults America one last time before going home with his family.
