Recap / King Of The Hill S 10 E 8 Business Is Picking Up

Go To

Hank tries to stop Bobby from wanting a career in picking up human and animal waste after Bobby shadows a successful local businessman (voiced by Jackass's own Johnny Knoxville) who's made a name for himself doing the same.

Tropes:

  • Actor Allusion: Peter Sterling, voiced by Johnny Knoxville, ends up being flung around in a port-a-potty in the final act.
  • Bad "Bad Acting": Jimmy Wichard does not hide the fact that his assault of Peter is staged, both asking for his cue and taking too long to realize he's been given it. Bobby doesn't pick up on it though, probably because he goes too far to be mistaken for faking it.
  • Boring, but Practical: This is how Peter Sterling manages to become well-off. He does business that no one else wants any part of and thus does not have any competition.
  • Fantasy-Forbidding Father: Hank really wants Bobby to join Strickland Propane rather than anything else, including the job he picked at school. He manages to explain to Sterling the reason why he thinks Bobby is not cut out for this line of work (it would make him a Bully Magnet) and, in a way, Wichard illustrates that thought.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Hank manages to convince Sterling to show Bobby that his job is not perfect by faking what Hank fears (that it will attract bullies). Then Sterling hires Jimmy Wichard to be the bully, and becomes a victim of non-faked assault. Bobby do decides to call it quits with collecting animal feces, so mission accomplished.
  • Hypocrisy Nod: Bobby doesn't hesitate to point out Hank wants him to quit the first job he genuinely enjoys, something Hank was dreaming of from the moment he could first visit Strickland Propane, because it's not a "respectful" line of work.
Bobby: First you want me to have a future. Now it's respect. I can't hit a moving target, Dad!
Peggy: My God, Bobby, your shoes! Did you take your work shoes off?!
Bobby: Other than the fact that it's not the great almighty propane, show me just one downside to my career!
  • Insufferable Imbecile: One more point for Jimmy Wichard: he was hired to fake bullying Peter Sterling by Sterling himself. Sterling was probably expecting insults, not being flung down a hill in a port-a-potty. This might have ended up working in his favor, as Jimmy was too obvious about his attack being staged but going that far would be evidence it wasn't.
  • Nervous Wreck: Peggy becomes one after Bobby says he picks up poop and other gross stuff with a vacuum hose and his bare hands (albeit, using fingerless gloves) and even panics about Bobby’s jumpsuit and boots at the thought of them being dirty.
  • Nice Guy: Peter is one of the few "misguided mentor figures for Bobby" who's actually portrayed as a decent guy. Hank makes clear that he respects Peter, and that his objection with Bobby working for him is that he lacks the charm and social skills to make a career out of waste removal without ridicule.
  • Overturned Outhouse: Jimmy Wichard and his buddies lock Peter Sterling in a port-a-potty and roll it down a hill. It turns out Peter secretly hired them to do it to show Bobby that the waste removal job is not all that it's cracked up to be.
  • Special Guest: Johnny Knoxville as Peter Sterling.
