Recap / Jessica Jones (2015) S3E6 "AKA Sorry Face"

Go To

As the police sift through the gruesome crime scene, Jessica and Trish race to find Sallinger's latest captive.

This episode contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Alone with the Psycho: Erik finds himself kidnapped and at the mercy of a serial killer who hates "cheaters", meaning he reserves a special point of hatred for supers.
  • Armored Closet Gay: Hinted at with Sallinger, who bolted in the middle of a kill when his victim, thinking it was heavy kink, kissed him.
  • Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: Despite their fight the previous episode, Berry does love her brother. When she finds out he's safe, she runs in and joyfully embraces him.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Jessica and Trish bust through the doors just in time to save Erik from Sallinger.
  • Camp Gay: Hogarth's old partner has found that being out of the closet suits him.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Rand Enterprises is mentioned repeatedly by Hogarth as the one client they can't afford to lose, then near the end of the episode Benowitz comes to inform her that Rand has decided to move on to their firm.
    • When Hogarth says how Danny Rand would never accept to leave her firm, Benowitz tell her he has been on sabbatical for some time and the company made the decision without him, referencing the end of the second season of Iron Fist (2017).
  • Curb-Stomp Battle: Malcolm confronts Berry's pimp, who previously sucker-punched him, and beats the living hell outta him.
  • Destination Defenestration: Jessica shoves Trish out a window to prove that she's got powers.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Sallinger's first intended victim was a star chef who very slightly overcooked a steak. This was enough for Sallinger to decide that he was a fraud and therefore deserving of death.
  • Distressed Dude: Erik, who spends most of the episode tied up in a chair hoping for his Love Interest to come rescue him.
  • Duct Tape for Everything: Sallinger binds Erik to an office chair with duct tape.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Sallinger’s philosophy consciously echoes language of Men’s Rights Activists and the incel movement. He believes it’s inherently unfair that some people are born with natural advantages, like charm and good looks.
  • Evil Is Petty: Sallinger was willing to kill a chef with a michelin star for serving him a sub-par steak.
  • Ignored Epiphany: Sallinger believes Erik when he says he can Detect Evil in him, and it seems to unnerve him, but he quickly rationalises it as Erik actually sensing his unflinching dedication to justice.
  • Internal Reveal: Trish's mom learns that she has powers.
  • Justice by Other Legal Means: Since Sallinger has covered his tracks as a Serial Killer too well, Jessica suggests taking him down for kidnapping, which Erik could testify to. However, this would require Erik to do some jail time for his Blackmail, too, and since he's effectively allergic to precisely the sort of people that jails are full of he can't bring himself to do it.
  • Mistaken for Gay: When Jessica tells Dorothy that she and Trish has something to tell her, Dorothy thinks they're about to tell her they're a couple. She seems unbothered by it except that she thinks Trish can do better.
    • Likewise Sallinger. His first victim thought they were just playing a really kinky game.
  • Not So Above It All: Though Jess does her best to play the Aloof Dark-Haired Girl, Erik saying that she's "like aspirin to me" clearly hits home. She's even willing to cuddle, until Erik says Sallinger is planning on upping his game.
  • Oh, Crap!: The chef that Sallinger almost killed goes pale when Jessica reveals that the guy who had him tied up was about to kill him, not get kinky.
  • Paralyzing Fear of Sexuality: Sallinger's first intended victim thought that him tying him up and yelling at him was just a kinky sex game, and kissed him. This freaked Sallinger out enough to send him fleeing.
  • Reasonable Authority Figure: Despite the fact that everything surrounding Jessica's case on Sallinger is whackadoo and full of holes and she's obviously covering for both Trish and Erik, Costa is still entirely on her side and is doing everything he can to help build a case on a man he knows to be a complete psycho.
  • Refuge in Audacity: How does Jessica expose Trish’s Powers? By throwing her out a window.
  • Rousing Speech: Hogarth rallies her associates with one as she sets them to work keeping the clients from leaving.
  • Tears of Blood: Spending enough time in Sallinger's presence is enough to cause Erik to have a Psychic Nosebleed from his eyes.
  • The Unfavorite: Apparently the root of Sallinger's obsession with "fairness" is being this to his brother despite being (at least according to himself) more accomplished in every way.
  • You Should Have Died Instead: Sallinger says his father told him this after his brother died. Then stabbed him in the chest. At the funeral.
