Jessica wrestles with her emotions as she tries to untangle herself from a murder investigation.
This episode contains examples of the following tropes:
- Abusive Parents: Discussed by Erik and Jessica. Jessica mentions how abusive Dorothy was towards Trish as a child. Erik then tells her that his father was a piece of shit too. But it still didn't make it any easier to bury him. Jessica eventually agrees to this.
- The Atoner: Played with. Hogarth claims that she's trying to right some mistakes. Jessica marvels that she manages to make even that sound calculated.
- Even Evil Can Be Loved: One of the detectives investigating Officer Nussbaumer's murder feels that she owes him her life and is therefore determined to find justice for him.
- From Bad to Worse: Not only does Jessica realize that Trish is a murderer, she herself gets arrested for her sister's crimes.
- Heel Realization: Malcolm realizes how much of an immoral person he became since working for Hogarth, all just for money and status.
- Heroic Seductress: Jessica has sex with Erik so she can search his apartment for evidence while he's asleep.
- Lonely Funeral: Subverted. Jessica and Trish expects Dorothy to have one of these, but in fact the house is packed.
- Out of Focus: Sallinger doesn't show up in this episode.
- Pet the Dog:
- We're shown that for all Dorothy's failings as a mother, she did in fact provide much help and support to her clients.
- Although she does take a few shots at Jessica in her will (leaving her the contents of her liquor cabinet), she also leaves her the chair she liked to sit in as a kid.
- The Reveal: Erik didn't kill Nussbaumer – Trish did! And she also kills Jace Montero.
- Ship Tease: After Malcolm breaks up with Zaya, he and Berry (now calling herself Brianna) share a kiss and then have sex.
- Spiteful Will: Dorothy apparently couldn't resist the chance to get a few final digs in at Jessica, pointedly leaving her the contents of her liqour cabinet.
- Wham Shot: The episode ends with Erik opening the door to a trailer to find Trish beating the crap out of someone inside.
