Recap / Jem S 2 E 7 Fathers Day

Go To

The episode starts with Video filming a music video for Jem and the Holograms. Video mentions that she doesn't know what to buy her father for Father's Day, to which Jem suggests that she make him a video. The women then decide to get home movies of their dads to put in the video. Kimber, however, isn't taking to the plan as neatly as the rest of her family. Her feelings over her dad's recent death are still too raw. Jerrica asks Kimber to write a song for a Father's Day banquet in Video's hometown, but Kimber angrily refuses to.

Meanwhile, Pizzazz asks her father if he'd like to do anything with her for Father's Day. As always, he brushes his daughter off, saying he's busy with horse-related business. Clash invites her and the rest of the Misfits to her hometown of Mulberry. As it turns out, Clash and Video are cousins who live only a few doors down from each other.

Jerrica takes Kimber to the ranch house where they used to ride horses, hoping that will inspire her to write the song, but Kimber still refuses. While she's riding, Kimber falls off her horse and is knocked unconscious. Luckily, Pizzazz's father is nearby, and he helps Kimber. After Kimber wakes up, the two become close and bond over their similar familial problems. After avoiding it for the entire episode, Kimber finally decides to write the song.

When Pizzazz sees Kimber arriving with her father for the banquet, she becomes very angry. She confronts her father about how he ignored her but could make time for Kimber. This causes him to become mad at Pizzazz as well. The two leave on negative grounds.

The episode ends with a concert at the Father's Day banquet, where Jem and the Holograms sing the song Kimber has written in memory of her father.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Animation Bump: “Let’s Blow This Town” looks like it came from a high budget movie rather than a Sunbow cartoon of the 80s
  • Big Eater: Once again, it's shown that the Misfits have a large appetite.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The episode ends with Kimber feeling a little better about her father's death, but it also has no resolution between Pizzazz and her father. It even ends on a bittersweet song.
  • Clashing Cousins: Video and Clash have this dynamic. They're also around the same age, with Video being two years older than her cousin.
  • Daddy's Girl:
    • Kimber is shown to have been very close to her father.
    • Clash is quite fond of her father, and he adores her, too.
    • In a twisted way, Pizzazz is one. Or at minimum, she wishes she were one. Pizzazz reacts to Clash mentioning her father adores her with confusion on how a father could adore their child.
  • Depending on the Artist: This is one of the few episodes where Pizzazz has slight muscle definition. It's most prominent in the music video for "Let's Blow This Town".
  • Girlish Pigtails: Kimber wore her hair in pigtails as a little girl.
  • Grief Song:
    • "Something Is Missing in My Life" is repurposed as being about Kimber's feelings towards her dad. It was originally about Jem missing her earrings.
    • "You're Always There in My Heart" is about Jerrica and Kimber missing their father.
  • Implausible Hair Color: This episode proves that Pizzazz and Clash were born with green and purple hair, respectively. It means that Clash dyed her hair in early episodes and then went back to her natural colour, not the other way around.
  • Invisible Parents:
    • Pizzazz is the only Misfit to mention her father. Roxy ran away from home, and Jetta's parents are across the pond, but it's unclarified if Stormer's dad is deceased or just off-screen.
    • Shana and Aja make reference to their biological fathers, but they're not shown.
  • Missing Mom: Pizzazz's mother walked out on her and her father when Pizzazz was young.
  • Only Known by Their Nickname: Clash's father calls her "Clash", rather than "Constance".
  • Parental Neglect: After his wife left, Harvey withdrew and stopped paying attention to Pizzazz. He spoiled her with material objects instead of affection. As an adult, he isn't much better, and he can't relate to Pizzazz. He doesn't even know her Stage Name.
  • Snow Means Death: In "You're Always There In My Heart", there's a sequence where Kimber and Jerrica walk through the seasons with their father. By winter, he's dead.
  • There Are No Therapists: Both Kimber and Pizzazz could use therapy to deal with their issues over their fathers. Jerrica, though, just shrugs off Kimber's issues, and Pizzazz ignores hers.
  • Unnamed Parent: Video's parents and Clash's mother are unnamed. Clash's father's name is Buzz.
  • Witch with a Capital "B": This episodes contains one of the many times Pizzazz calls a Hologram a "witch".
