Recap / Jane The Virgin S 5 E 8 Chapter Eighty Nine

Go To

Jane tries to win Rafael back while dealing with Mateo's school difficulties. Rogelio tries to get Jane to rewrite his script for The Passions of Steve and Brenda. Petra deals with her mysterious housebreaker. Alba and Jorge prepare for their immigration interview.

Tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch: Jane shows up at someone's door to apologize. It looks like it's going to be Rafael (and her entire apology speech also applies to her situation with Rafael) until she pulls out the Rogelio-themed apology basket.
  • Borrowed Catchphrase: A physical example of sorts; Jane borrows Rogelio's habit of giving people gift baskets in order to apologize to him.
  • Grand Romantic Gesture: Jane tries one on Rafael. It backfires horribly, getting him in trouble with his boss.
  • Leaning on the Fourth Wall: Justin Hartley shows up in a brief cameo as Rogelio reminisces about meeting him. Then Rogelio suggests that Hartley could do a cameo in The Passions of Steve and Brenda, and the narrator say's it's unlikely, because he doesn't do cameos.
  • Like Parent, Unlike Child: As a writer, Jane finds it especially difficult that Mateo is struggling in reading. Alba points out that she and Xo have this same dynamic. Alba spent years trying to get Xo to be more like her, and wishes she'd learned to accept Xo for who she was sooner.
  • Romantic Fakeā€“Real Turn: Jorge realizes as the result of his citizenship interview that he really is still in love with Alba.
  • Toilet Humor: Jane and Rafael figure out that the way to get Mateo interested in reading is to find words that rhyme with bodily functions.
  • Younger and Hipper: One of the notes that Rogelio gets from the network is that he and River are too old to be the stars.
  • Zany Scheme: All the mysterious stuff that's been happening to Petra has been Ellie and Anna's fault. They saw J.R. shoot Milos, so they're convinced that she's a bad guy and they've been trying to scare her away from Petra.
