Recap / Big Finish Doctor Who
aka: Jago And Litefoot

Go To

Recaps of the ongoing Big Finish Doctor Who audio plays. The episodes can be bought (CD or digital) on the Big Finish website. As of August 2016, Spotify has acquired many of the plays as well, with the option to follow the uploads so the user is notified when new ones are available.

Please keep in mind that, although the series is officially part of the Whoniverse, it encompasses many different timelines/continuities and includes adaptations of existing works from the Doctor Who Expanded Universe. Due to Big Finish's sheer size and complexity, it also plays by the rules of the Doctor Who Expanded Universe: the TV series can at times contradict or overwrite the timelines described here, or adapt them for the televised continuity.

The list is not remotely complete yet. Neither are the recaps. Have fun!

    The Companion Chronicles
Generally, these are two-actor stories halfway between an audiobook and a fully dramatised play (although several of them could be classed as examples of the latter that just happen to only have two actors in them), with full music and sound effects, starring a companion (who is also the narrator) and featuring another character. They started out as a way to get round the Actor Existence Failure of the first three Doctors and Tom Baker's initial refusal to work with Big Finish, but proved such an interesting format they've been used for the Doctor-Companion teams who appear in conventional audios as well.

Partly due to the sheer amount of audios, and partly due to the introduction of The Early Adventures, the series was placed on indefinite hiatus in 2014. The hiatus did not last long, however; one year later, Series 9 was released as The First Doctor Volume 1 box set, consisting of four stories from the First Doctor's era. The Second Doctor got a similar treatment in June of 2016, and the two have alternated yearly ever sincenote .

    The Lost Stories
These audio dramas are stories that were planned to be made for the TV series, but for various reasons never were. They also became tied into the Big Finish continuity. The series is more-or-less retired now, as virtually every Lost Story that has enough material surviving to justify an adaptation has been produced, although since 2019 there has been the occasional release.

Series 1

Series 1, also filed under the Sixth Doctor, took many definite story ideas and a few that had been suggested to create the season 23 of Doctor Who that never was. It would have been Colin Baker's second season had it made it to air, but there was an enforced eighteen-month hiatus and "The Trial of a Time Lord" was made instead. "The Nightmare Fair", "Mission to Magnus" and "The Hollows of Time" were all stories that would definitely have been part of the original Season 23; of the three other stories that would have made up the real "lost" season, they could not agree terms with the writer of "The Ultimate Evil" (until 2019), the writer of "The Children of January" had to pull out due to other commitments, and not enough exists of Robert Holmes's "Yellow Fever and How to Cure It" to make an adaptation feasible. Thanks to their diverse origins, some of the serials are in the 2x45 minute format, and some in the 4x25 format.

Series 2

Series 2 widens the Lost Stories' scope. The first boxset features two scripts written by Moris Farhi for the series' first season. The second features a rejected Troughton serial and Terry Nation's pilot script for a standalone American Dalek series. And the final set is a finished version of the series' twenty-seventh season, script-edited by that era's showrunner Andrew Cartmel. The four stories actually existed in a far more fragmentary form than commonly assumed, so for Big Finish, Cartmel worked with the writers to finally turn them into finished episodes. Among other things, the "Cartmel Masterplan" barely features, as Cartmel maintains the "Masterplan" had become bigger in fan legend than it ever was in fact. The set also reworks the final story of the "season", originally written as Sophie Aldred's final story, so that Ace remains in the TARDIS in line with later continuity.

This series takes place in the same continuity as the monthly audios, but at a later point in the Eighth Doctor's life. It was also produced in 50-odd minute single episodes rather than serials, and divided into seasons, to complement the revival of the TV series.

    Destiny of the Doctor
A special series for the 50th anniversary featuring a story for each of the then-eleven Doctors, all tied together by a Cross Through. Like The Companion Chronicles, these are two-man plays featuring a companionnote  and another character. Unlike The Companion Chronicles, the narration isn't first-person by the companion, it's just read by the actor, putting it closer to an extended Short Trips adventure.

    Unbound
A mini-series of What If? stories. In a bit of a surprise, David Warner's Doctor ("Sympathy For The Devil/Masters Of War") showed up again to meet Benny, and ended up entering the main universe and getting involved in the mainline continuity.

  • Auld Mortality: What if the Doctor and Susan had never left Gallifrey?
  • Sympathy for the Devil: What if the Doctor had not been UNIT's scientific advisor?
  • Full Fathom Five: What if the Doctor believed that the ends justified the means?
  • He Jests At Scars...: What if the Valeyard had won at the end of "The Trial Of A Time Lord"?
  • Deadline: What if Doctor Who did not materialise as a television series?
  • Exile: What if the Doctor had escaped the justice of the Time Lords at the end of "The War Games"?
  • A Storm of Angels: What if the Doctor really had changed history, even just the tiniest bit?
  • Masters of War: A sequel to "Sympathy For The Devil", above. What if the Doctor and Davros met for the first time long after the creation of the Daleks, instead of during their genesis?

2022 introduced a new series of Unbound audios based on the idea that the Fourth Doctor completed his mission in "Genesis of the Daleks", but this created a new timeline where the Daleks weren't erased, the Time War started "early", and the Doctor regenerated into a new fifth body that resembled his canon sixth incarnation but termed himself "The Warrior".

     Time Lord Victorious
Big Finish's tie-ins to the multimedia Time Lord Victorious event. The main component focuses on the Eighth Doctor teaming up with the Dalek Time Squad, dealing with the repercussions of the Tenth Doctor's altering of time. Genetics of the Daleks stars Tom Baker, acting as a prequel to the A Dalek Awakens Escape Room, while Echoes of Extinction is pair of linked adventures starring the Eighth Doctor and Tenth Doctor. Finally, a duology of Short Trips were released focusing on the Master, more loosely tied into the ongoing narrative.

Originally slated for a January 2016 release, Big Finish released the first box set early, on Christmas Day 2015 (conveniently, immediately following the character's final television appearance in "The Husbands of River Song"). The first four series feature River meeting classic series Doctors; having paired her with every surviving actor to have played the Doctor on television, later series try other hooks, such as pairing her against different incarnations of the Master or prequels to classic television stories. The seventh set is the first to feature no such hook (barring the Weeping Angels in the final story).
