Jackie has stolen the archive Shendu needed to free his demon brethren. At the same time, Jade wanted a tattoo, so she used the image of the book's cover. The tattoo gave her the power to summon and control the Shadowkhan, however, it also made her slowly more evil.

This episode provides examples of:

  • Chekhov's Gun: The symbol on the book that becomes Jade's tattoo makes a cameo in Season 3 before revealing its true meaning in Season 4 — it's an image of Tarakudo, king of the Shadowkhan.
  • The Corruption: Jade's skin start turning blue shortly after summoning the Shadowkhan (though she doesn't mind). Later, her eyes also turn red.
  • Crazy-Prepared: Uncle was wise enough to prepare more tattoo-removing potion. As he states, a very important rule of magic is to always make an extra potion just in case.
  • Did Not Think This Through: Evil Jade tries to read the demon archive but doesn't understand a word of it. Her plan to understand it is forcing Shendu to read it, not anticipating betrayal from him.
  • Drunk on the Dark Side: What happens to Jade as the Shadowkhan tattoo begins to corrupt her.
  • Et Tu, Brute?: Jackie uses this strategy for Jade to go after Shendu.
Jade: I have new friends now.
Jackie: Oh, if Shendu is your friend, why is he stealing your book?
Jade: [gasps, then sees Shendu trying to sneak off with the book] Traitor!!
  • Evil Costume Switch: The first sign is that Jade is wearing an all-black version of her clothes, then she switched for a purple and black dress with no shoes.
  • Foreshadowing: As noted under Chekhov's Gun and Innocuously Important Episode, Jade's ability to control the Shadowkhan with the tattoo means that Shendu did not create the Shadowkhans in the first place, and there is another source he is using that becomes relevant in Season 4.
  • Innocuously Important Episode: It's a filler episode... for Season 2. See Chekhov's Gun for why it ended up becoming so important.
  • Literal Ass-Kicking: When the Shadowkhan are spanking the Enforcers, two of them do it by literally kicking Hak Foo's arse.
  • Magical Barefooter: Upon switching to evil and wearing a purple and black dress, she chose to be barefoot.
  • Manipulative Bastard: When Evil Jade sends the Shadowkhan to bring Shendu, he allows them to take him without resistance and pretends to act as her subordinate to turn her against her loved ones while he steals the Demon Archive.
  • Mundane Utility: Jade starts out having the Shadowkahn help her get ready for school.
  • No MacGuffin, No Winner: Jade loses her powers when her friends get rid of her tattoo. Before she does, she commands a Shadowkhan to destroy the book, so Shendu doesn't get it.
  • Never My Fault: When Finn, Ratso, and Chow pin the blame on the Shadowkhan for Jackie's escape with the book, Shendu is not happy with this.
    Chow: It wasn't our fault.
Finn: Yeah, that's right. The Shadowkhan were there, too.
Shendu: The Shadowkhan are my puppets. They do only what I command. Are you suggesting this is MY FAULT?!!
  • Oh, Crap!: The Enforcers do this when Jade begins to order the Shadowkhan to spank them.
    Hak Foo: They're here...
    • Jade when she finds her fake tattoo isn't coming off.
    • Uncle when he recognizes the tattoo on Jade's leg.
    • Shendu himself, when Evil Jade sees him walking away with the book.
  • Treacherous Advisor: Shendu pretends to act as Evil Jade's subordinate so he can steal the Demon Archive.
  • Spit Take: As Jade is in the bathroom muttering how nice it'd be to have breakfast, she starts gargling...and does a massive spit take when her mirror reveals a swarm of Shadowkhan behind her.
  • Why Isn't It Attacking?: Jade is surprised to find the Shadowkhan are in her house, and yet not attacking her. Instead, they're just bringing her clothes and breakfast.
    • Earlier, when Jade is cornered by Hak Foo, the Shadowkhan emerge, and then, they're each surprised once the Shadowkhan start attacking him, instead.
