Recap / Iron Fist (2017) S2E2 "The City's Not for Burning"

Go To

Danny and Colleen try to broker a peace between the Hatchets and the Golden Tigers. Davos and Joy attend an auction to buy an artifact crucial for their plan.

Tropes:

  • Apathetic Citizens: Nobody except for Danny even thinks of helping the wounded Golden Tiger. Most just stare at him, with one man even taking a photo with his phone until Danny shouts at him to call the police instead.
  • Character Development: Ward is an absolute asshole to his assistant... but he apologizes and acknowledges that her contributions have value.
  • Double Entendre: When Joy says she's dry (as in her glass of wine is empty) Miko is staring at Davos and says she's not.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point:
    • Danny puts Mary's odd behaviour down to dehydration and takes her back to his apartment for a glass of water. He also thinks that Davos only wanted an apology during their meeting in the previous episode.
    • Ward thinks Davos is just Joy's boyfriend-of-the-week, as he never met him during the events of Season One.
    • As Mika tries to seduce Davos he grabs her throat in anger, but she just thinks he's into rough sex.
  • Even Evil Has Standards:
    • Even though it's implied that Joy has a grudge against Mika from their college days, she puts her foot down when Davos is contemplating killing her and stealing the bowl, preferring to blackmail her instead.
    • Davos finds the idea of sex for blackmail to be distasteful and looks very much disinterested and terrified as Joy manipulates Mika into jumping him.
    • Ryhno is originally going to shoot Colleen when she turns up at their lair after their failed attempt to assassinate her, but decides otherwise on realizing her good intentions, agreeing to put aside their vendetta, at least for now.
    • Invoked when Colleen asks Hai-Qing Yang's wife to convince him to make peace instead of war.
  • Even Evil Has Loved Ones:
    • Lei-Kung declares Danny the winner without Davos yielding to keep Danny from possibly killing Davos, who refuses to yield.
    • Hai-Qing Yang's happily married to his wife Sherry, and his nephew was a driver murdered in the armored car heist that Danny thwarted.
  • Fighting Your Friend: Danny and Davos competed as friends for the Iron Fist and are the final two contenders left. At one point, Danny even hesitates since Davos had removed his mask and it was a reminder to Danny of who he was fighting, while Davos pleads with Danny to yield so he won't be forced to kill him.
  • Finger Poke of Doom: Davos uses this to induce a stroke in Hai-Qing Yang. We also see him try to use such a move when fighting Danny to be the last contender standing for the Iron Fist.
  • Fan Disservice: The sex scene between Mika and Davos is obviously meant to be as uncomfortable for the viewer as it is for Davos himself.
  • Flashback: We have one of Danny and Davos’s time in K’un-Lun.
  • Hates Small Talk: Davos in spades, which only encourages Mika to seduce this handsome aloof man.
  • Heroic Second Wind: During the flashback fight, it looks as if Davos is about to KO Danny, only for Danny to spring up off the ground and start fighting anew.
  • Honey Trap: Joy has Davos have sex with Mika Prada which is recorded on her laptop to get her to hand over the bowl, saying that Mika's husband is a Congressman up for reelection and she'd definitely do anything to avoid a scandal. Clearly, it's not something Davos is comfortable with doing.
  • Hope Spot: Danny and Colleen convince the Yangs to make peace instead of war, only for Davos to kill Hai-Qing Yang because it would interfere with his own plan.
  • Interesting Situation Duel: The 'one hand tied to your opponent's hand' version, though Davos soon breaks their connection enabling him to really go at Danny.
  • Mythology Gag:
    • The bowl that Davos and Joy are acquiring through Mika Prada is from the Erskine collection owned by Ernst Erskine, the researcher, collector and adventurer who wrote Orson Randall's biography.
    • During the fight between Danny and Davos, they're wearing masks that resemble the Iron Fist mask from the comics.
  • Needle in a Stack of Needles: Ward thinks that the useless Rand patents Joy is going after are just to obfuscate the one she's really interested in.
  • Neighborhood-Friendly Gangsters: Sherry Yang, Hai-Qing Yang's wife, is a big community organizer, and hosts events at the community center where Colleen works. Meanwhile, Danny's able to convince Hai-Qing to agree to arrange a parlay with the Golden Tigers to prevent bloodshed.
  • No Good Deed Goes Unpunished:
    • Just when Hai-Qing Yang has agreed for a peace talk with the Golden Tigers, he is crippled by Davos for going back on their deal.
    • Davos is reluctant to beat his friend to death, but this only gives Danny a chance for a Heroic Second Wind during which he defeats Davos. His father cuts short the duel to save Davos' life, but this has only caused Davos to think he could have won if allowed to continue.
  • No-Holds-Barred Beatdown: Danny and Davos each delivers one to the other in their fight to prove themselves worthy of facing Shou-Lao.
  • Pet the Dog: Ward is deriding his assistant, but then stops and apologizes for his behaviour.
  • Popcultural Osmosis Failure: Sam Chung has no idea what Colleen is talking about when she starts quoting the most famous line from Chinatown.
  • Really Gets Around: Ward insinuates that Mika Prada slept with several of Joy's college boyfriends and one of her professors.
  • Rewatch Bonus: Davos tries to give Danny the Touch of Death partway through their fight in the flashback, before ripping the cloth tying their hands together and even before asking him to yield.
  • Touch of Death: Davos uses this to give Yang a stroke in front of his mooks without them suspecting, while supposedly embracing him.
  • Wounded Gazelle Gambit
    • Knowing Colleen's Chronic Hero Syndrome, BB stages a fake mugging to lure her into an alley where she can be shot. Fortunately it works too well as Colleen is close enough to snatch the gun off BB.
    • Davos is apparently winning but Danny is just maneuvering him into a position where he will be Blinded by the Light of the sun.
