Recap / Invader Zim S 2 E 7 The Voting Of The Doomed

Go To

When the school president has a breakdown, an election is called for a replacement. Zim enters, in the belief that the position will grant him power. To counter this, Dib (who is rejected as a candidate) backs secondary candidate Willy, a drooling moron who needs his help just to form coherent sentences.

Tropes

  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Whoever wins the position of school president ends up being brainwashed into a preppy drone.
  • Brick Joke: During one of the debates, Zim has GIR shower the crowd with salted nuts from his head. At the end of the episode, he has GIR pelt Dib with those same nuts.
  • Butt-Monkey: Dib gets muzzled twice, is shown to be so unpopular that saying something nice about him gets Willy pelted with garbage, and ultimately his efforts to beat Zim in the election just ends up doing the Irken a favor.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: A minor complaint about the cleanliness of the school bathrooms during a school spirit pep rally causes the previous Student President to fall into a seizure (apparently induced by some sort of control chip), alarm klaxons sound, and a group of armored SWAT team looking security guards rush the stage to arrest and remove the Student President from the stage. The school's floating camera drones then announce that the Student President has been removed from power for a "loss of spirit" and replacement candidates for a new election will be picked from the gathered student body.
  • Election Day Episode: Admittedly it's just a school election, but it's treated as Serious Business.
  • Evil Is Petty:
    • Zim takes the time to rub into Dib's face the fact that he inadvertently saved Zim by interfering in the election.
    • The school principal talks to Willy after he won the student president election to inform him that he won't complain about the bathrooms like the previous student president did, prior to brainwashing Willy to be the school's preppy yes man. The principal even angrily silences his employee who points out that the bathrooms actually are dirty.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: By keeping Zim from winning the election, Dib accidentally saves him from getting brainwashed.
  • The Omniscient Council of Vagueness: The school principal and his staff are presented as this, meeting in a shadowy room and using brainwashing to forward their agenda.
  • Running Gag: Zim lists the size of Dib's head as a major issue during one of the debates.
  • Weakened by the Light: Miss Bitters can't be in the sunlight without burning.
