Recap / Inside Job S1 E1 "Unpresidented"

Go To

Reagan is looking forward to a promotion, but things go off the rails when J.R. hires a co-boss to compensate for her lacking people skills.

Tropes:

  • A.I. Is a Crapshoot: Rand sabotages ROBOTUS so he will go haywire the second Reagan is pulled out of the project for whatever reason and when someone flashes a camera in his face afterwards. Between then and the time Reagan gets to him, he's become self-aware and has written out the shutdown commands Reagan tries to use on him.
  • Bait-and-Switch Comment: J.R. brings in Reagan to compliment her on her hard work, only to reveal he's adding a second boss to compensate for her lack of people skills.
  • Even the Guys Want Him: When Reagan shows photos of Brett's personal trainer job (which show off his shirtless and muscular body), Myc notes he's sensing three people in the room who feel attracted to Brett at the moment and he singles out a very sweaty Glenn, who nervously and badly denies it.
  • Flipping the Bird: When Rand disses Reagan's iron fist, it flips him the bird, sprouts two additional hands that do the same, and all three flash as a "Like A Boss" flag sprouts from the main middle finger. He concedes that it's actually pretty nice.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: The news ticker for the president's "troll" statement mentions that a senator was filmed eating a mouse and hissed when inquired, indicating that he is a Reptoid.
  • From Bad to Worse: Reagan and Brett intercept ROBOTUS to stop his plan to isolate the United States of America, believing it to be the greatest country in the world. She feeds him all of the knowledge of the internet to prove how far from the truth that is, and then some. Unfortunately, this causes him to reach an epiphany to nuke not only the population of the USA, but all of humanity as a whole.
  • Literal Metaphor: Reagan boasts of ruling the office with an iron fist, then shows Rand the literal iron fist she made for the occasion.
  • Meaningful Background Event: Rand tries to take a peek at Reagan's code for ROBOTUS, but she shoos him off. When she gets up to rant, you can see Rand lean off-screen towards her laptop, the sabotage he will later admit to.
  • Our Presidents Are Different: President Buffoon. The whole reason why ROBOTUS was made was because the President they picked out was so stupid that Cognito Inc. can't control him. By the end of the episode, they unkidnap him because it's better to have an incompetent president than a genocidal robot decoy.
  • Pet the Dog: Rand conceding that Reagan's iron fist is actually pretty good.
  • Take That!:
    • Reagan calls nationalism "Politics for basic bitches".
    • Reagan states that the only possible reason Brett listen to the Dave Matthews' song "Crash Into Me" five times a day is because he's receiving subliminal messages from the song.
    • Let's just say that the idea of a president too stupid to control really sounds like it was inspired by one very specific president.
  • Trumplica: ROBOTUS's plan to wall off the entirety of America from the rest of the world sounds like a parody of Donald Trump's 2016 campaign promise to build a wall separating the US from Mexico.
  • Weight Woe: During Brett's Rousing Speech, he notes that he's carrying a 140 lb woman (actually a healthy weight for a 30 year old) on his back. Reagan defensively says that her Stairmaster is broken.
