Recap / Incredible Dennis The Menace E 2

Go To

The second episode of The Incredible Dennis the Menace.

When Dennis gets a case of tonsillitis, he goes into the hospital, frightened by "mis-informed" medical facts his friends have given. However, when Mr. Wilson accidently winds up as his roommate, he forgets about his own fears, and sets out to "protect" his friend.

This episode provides examples of:

  • All Love Is Unrequited: When Dennis' friends visit him in the hospital, Margaret tells Joey that when she and Dennis are married, she's going to have their baby while Dennis gets a high-paying executive job to build them a magnificent castle in the suburbs. Upon hearing this, Dennis says, "Get a grip, Margaret, we're only six!"
  • Babysitter's Nightmare: In this episode, it is revealed that Dennis has gone through so many babysitters that Alice and Henry are up to "Z" in the phonebook.
  • Badly Battered Babysitter: Averted with the babysitter who looks after Dennis in this episode, as Dennis didn't even bother her, but played straight with a few previous ones. When Henry and Alice return home to check on the babysitter, they find that she isn't tied up in the swing set like Tiffany was, or dangling from her heels in the bedroom window like Tanya was.
  • Butt-Monkey: Mr. Wilson. Early in the episode, he gets his hand caught in a trap he set for a gopher and wrapped in his garden hose when Dennis sets his suitcase on top of it, then pulls it off. He later trips on Dennis' trap and injures his leg, resulting in him being hospitalized and sharing a room with Dennis. Later still, he gets mistaken for Mr. Smedley due to Dennis switching their charts, has to disguise himself as a nurse to avoid being detected by the doctors, gets stuck on a windowsill when he thinks Dennis is on there, and mistaken for a crazed nurse trying to jump from the fifth floor. Finally, when he gets back home in a motorized wheelchair, Dennis has the remote for it, having mistaken it for the remote for the Gopher-it machine, taking him for a wild ride.
  • Catch Your Death of Cold: The window to Dennis' hospital room opens when Dennis tries to make a balloon for Mr. Wilson out of a glove and it explodes. This results in the order number for Mr. Wilson's Gopher-it machine flying out it, but Dennis catches it before it falls out. When Mr. Wilson thinks Dennis is on the windowsill, he gets out, and when Nurse Goodnight sees the open window, she thinks Mr. Wilson left it open so Dennis could catch a cold and closes it. This results in Mr. Wilson being stuck on the windowsill.
  • Circling Birdies: Stars spin around Mr. Wilson's head when Dennis' glove balloon explodes.
  • Disguised in Drag: After escaping from the doctors who prepped him for brain surgery after having mistaken him for Mr. Smedley, Mr. Wilson disguises himself as a nurse to avoid being detected by them. When he gets stuck on the windowsill, he gets mistaken for a deranged nurse trying to jump from the hospital's fifth floor.
  • Embarrassing Damp Sheets: Discussed; when Mr. Wilson accidentally spills a pitcher of water on his bed thanks to Dennis' antics, he complains that his bed's wet. Dennis then tells Mr. Wilson that they have a special pan for that, and shows him his bedpan.
  • File Mix Up: When Mr. Wilson asks Nurse Goodnight why he can't have steak and potatoes like Mr. Smedley, the patient across the hall, Nurse Goodnight says that his chart says he has high blood pressure and is overweight. While she is distracted, Dennis switches Mr. Wilson and Mr. Smedley's charts so Mr. Wilson can order steak and potatoes. This results in the doctors mistaking Mr. Wilson for Mr. Smedley, who is due to be prepped for brain surgery.
  • Funny X-Ray: When Dennis causes Mr. Wilson's bed to roll down the hallway, they go through the X-ray room, where Dr. Bereford gets an X-ray of them waving their arms.
  • Garden-Hose Squirt Surprise: When Dennis talks to Mr. Wilson about getting his tonsils removed, he leaves his suitcase on Mr. Wilson's garden hose. When Dennis removes it, rather than the expected gag of Mr. Wilson being sprayed in the face by his hose, the hose wraps itself around him.
  • I Can't Hear You: The staff of the hospital have horror stories of Dennis' past visits. Dr. Massey's involves a two-year-old Dennis having been sent to the hospital to get a splinter removed. Dr. Massey is about to listen to Dennis' heartbeat, when Dennis snatches the stethoscope from him and yells into the resonator, damaging his hearing as a result. When Dr. Bereford asks Dr. Massey if it was him it happened to, Dr. Massey asks Dr. Bereford what he said to him, revealing that his hearing is still damaged.
  • Injured Limb Episode: When Mr. Wilson trips on the trap Dennis set for the surgeons, he falls down the stairs and injures his leg. To make matters worse for him, he has to share a room with Dennis.
  • Malaproper: Dennis mispronounces "tonsillectomy" as "tonsil-neck-tummy", thinking that the doctors are going to remove his neck and tummy in addition to his tonsils. He also mispronounces "intensive care unit" as "expensive care unit", "surgeon" as "sturgeon", and "blood pressure" as "blood presser".
  • Mistaken for Pregnant: When Dennis' friends visit him in the hospital, Joey asks Dennis what he's going to name his baby. When a confused Dennis asks Joey what he's talking about, Joey explains to Dennis that whenever his Aunt Julie goes to the hospital, she always comes home with a new baby. Margaret has to explain to Joey that she'll be the one having the baby when she and Dennis are married.
  • Morality Pet: Mrs. Wilson serves as this to Mr. Wilson in this episode. When Mr. Wilson complains about Dennis being a pest, Mrs. Wilson calls him out for refusing to talk to him when he needed him. She then makes Mr. Wilson deliver the ice cream she made for Dennis to the hospital to make it up to him.
  • Murphy's Bed: When Dennis tries to change the channel on his television, he grabs the remote to Mr. Wilson's bed, resulting in it attacking Mr. Wilson.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Henry and Alice realize that something's wrong with Dennis when the babysitter tells them that she didn't need the protective gear she was wearing, as Dennis went straight to bed and didn't bother her.
  • Sarcasm-Blind: Joey. When Margaret talks about how when she and Dennis are married, Dennis will get a high-paying job to build them a castle in the suburbs, Joey asks Dennis if the castle will have a moat. This exchange then occurs:
Margaret: Yes, right, Joey. And you can feed the dragons!
    Joey: Cool!
    Margaret: Oh, brother!
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: At the end of the episode, the gopher in Mr. Wilson's backyard takes a carrot and a miniature suitcase with him when he gets terrorized by Mr. Wilson's motorized wheelchair thanks to Dennis holding the remote control for it, having mistaken it for the remote to the Gopher-it.
  • Shout-Out: The scene where Dennis tries to save Mr. Wilson with a fire hose when the latter dangles from the windowsill of the hospital is a reference to the scene in Die Hard where Bruce Willis jumps off a tower with a fire hose wrapped around his waist.
  • The Tonsillitis Episode: In this episode, Dennis goes to the hospital for a tonsillectomy.
  • Trip Trap: Since Dennis is afraid of getting an operation, he sets up this kind of trap in his hospital room so the surgeons can't sneak up on him and operate on him when he least expects it. When Mr. Wilson comes to Dennis' hospital room to drop off a tin of ice cream that his wife made for Dennis, he trips on Dennis' trap and falls down the stairs, injuring his leg and getting himself hospitalized as a result. To make matters worse for Mr. Wilson, he has to share a hospital room with Dennis.
  • Unfortunate Item Swap: At the end of the episode, the Gopher-it is delivered to the Mitchell's house, while Mr. Wilson is confined to a motorized wheelchair. When Dennis tries to work the Gopher-it, he accidentally picks up the remote to Mr. Wilson's wheelchair, resulting in Mr. Wilson going for a wild ride.
  • Would Rather Suffer: When Nurse Goodnight catches up to Dennis and Mr. Wilson in the laundry room, Mr. Wilson begs for Nurse Goodnight to give him shots, awful-tasting medicine, and put him in isolation, as long as he doesn't have to be near Dennis. This inspires Dennis to face his fear of hospitals and go through with his tonsillectomy.
