Recap / I Love Lucy S 1 E 26 The Marriage License

Go To

Lucy is looking at hers and Ricky's marriage license and notices that it has a typo on it. She immediately frets that it means they aren't married. Ricky says that her worry is overblown, but has a friend in the license bureau. He thinks it would be a great prank to call the friend to say the marriage isn't valid due to the typo. Cue another Zany Scheme from Lucy where she insists they must recreate their proposal and wedding.

Tropes for this include:

  • Artistic License – Law: Suffice to say, one little typo on a marriage license won't mean that your marriage is invalidated. Ricky, however, was counting on Lucy not knowing that for his little prank.
  • Cassandra Truth: When things seem to go too far with Lucy not letting him stay in the same hotel room as him, Ricky confesses that he set up the prank for a laugh and they are still married. Lucy doesn't believe him, saying it's the silliest story he ever told.
  • Gratuitous Spanish: Ricky breaks out in long Spanish tirades when Lucy sets him off one too many times. The first one is simply translated as "She's crazy."
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Safe to say, Ricky's little joke on Lucy ends up causing most of the problems for him in this episode. He's nearly late to his show, has to spend the night in a hotel lobby, and is nearly arrested for breaking out in Spanish angrily.
  • Mistaken for Spies: The man who runs half the jobs in town mistakes Ricky for being a spy when he breaks out in a long Spanish tirade.
  • She Cleans Up Nicely: Ricky has this reaction when he sees Lucy in her wedding dress from eleven years ago. Time does fly, doesn't it?
  • You Look Familiar: The wife of the hotel owner would later play the recurring role of Mrs. Trumbull.
