Recap / Homestar Runner Bug In Mouth Disease

Go To

Airdate: Monday, May 9, 2005

We join Strong Sad in the TV room, watching a documentary on "why come Shakespeare was so awesome". Strong Bad comes in and informs "Dairy Queen" that his underwear collection "somehow" wound up being put up for auction online.

Strong Sad: (runs out of the room) Nobody buy the blue ones!

With his younger brother distracted, Strong Bad is free to watch the big Caleb Rentpayer marathon on TV.

Meanwhile, out in the Field "Homestar is running along" when he swallows a bug and immediately goes into a panic.

Homestar: What do I do? What do I do? (composes himself) Okay, okay, calm down. Calm... down. Remember health class. A-hem. (gets down on one knee) Sir or madam, are you all right? Do you need medical resistance? (anguished) Oh, it's not working! The good times are over!

Homestar stumbles upon Pom Pom and the King of Town, and begs them for help dealing with the bug he swallowed. When they don't have any ideas, Homestar confiscates and devours their ice cream bars in an attempt to "freeze 'em out" that "deliciously doesn't work".

While Strong Bad advises Strong Sad on using Boolean operators to find his underwear collection ("Blue AND ones! Good idea!"), Homestar interrupts Bubs' attempt at disposing of some shady evidence to ask for help. "Dr." Bubs doesn't find any bugs, but does take the opportunity to try and sell Homestar a fresh pancreas.

Homestar: (annoyed) Bubs, are you an unethical quack?
Bubs: The most quackinest!

Finally, Homestar goes to Strong Bad for advice, but Strong Bad refuses to put up with any interruptions and eventually knocks Homestar out with a skillet. And just in time for the big "Who Shot Caleb?" episode, too. Homestar awakens from his "skillet nap" to find Strong Bad has duct-taped his head to the TV in a desperate attempt to avoid missing the resolution.

Homestar Runner: Strong Bad, the good times are over! I swallowed your computer!
Strong Bad: You what?! (tears his head away from the television)
Homestar Runner: Oh, I mean a small bug. I swallowed a small bug.
Strong Bad: Aw, now my head's not taped to the TV!

Homestar ends up blabbing the ending to the "Who Shot Caleb?" plotline... turns out he was the one who shot Caleb Rentpayer, and he even appears in the episode to prove it. Strong Bad smacks Homestar in the face ("You traitor, you shot my favorite TV show!"), and Homestar manages to cough up the bug he swallowed. All is well, for Homestar and Strong Sad at least.

Homestar: Hey, look at that! A little guy. A bug did fly in my mouth!
Strong Bad: Ugh... the good times are definitely over.
Strong Sad: (comes in wearing blue boxer briefs) The world is saved! I found the blue ooones!

Tropes:

  • Accidental Misnaming: Homestar calls the King of Town "Santa".
  • Big "NO!": When Homestar grabs Pom Pom and the King of Town's "dang ice creams" the King of Town cries out "No! That stuff's prescription!"
  • Big "WHAT?!": Strong Bad's response when Homestar claims to have swallowed Strong Bad's computer is to shout "You WHAT?!"
  • Brick Joke: Strong Sad spends the whole cartoon looking for "the blue ones", and succeeds at the end.
  • Brutal Honesty: After Bubs tries to sell Homestar a new pancreas.
Homestar: Bubs, are you an unethical quack?
    Bubs: The most quackin'-est!
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Homestar sings along to the music from "Theme Song Video" (or rather, to the Mario Paint version of the song).
    • In his cameo on Caleb Rentpayer, Homestar is wearing his cool shades from "the bet".
  • Embarrassing Nickname:
    Strong Bad: Hey, Dairy Queen.
Strong Sad: I already told you, I don't wanna be called that anymore! I made a mistake!
    Strong Bad: Sorry, Dairy Queen.
  • Faux Horrific: Homestar's over-reacts wildly to swallowing a bug.
Homestar: The good times are over!!!
  • Frying Pan of Doom: When Homestar keeps interrupting his attempt to watch Caleb Rentpayer, Strong Bad Offhand Backhands him in the face with a skillet.
  • It's the Best Whatever, Ever!: Strong Bad says this to himself after taking a brief lunch break:
Strong Bad: "Strong Caleb, did you make the best omelette ever during the commercial break?" "I sure did!"
  • Malaproper: Homestar asks himself if "you need medical resistance."
  • Missing the Good Stuff: Zig-zagged; Strong Bad insists there's no way he's missing the "Who Shot Caleb" episode, and we get a fade-out and -in to the empty couch. Turns out Strong Bad was still there, he'd just duct-taped his head to the TV. Then Homestar goes and spoils the ending of "Who Shot Caleb?"
  • Mistaken for Santa: Homestar addresses the King of Town as "Santa." Given the King is a fat guy with a white beard and red robe and how much of a ditz Homestar is at this point in the series, it was bound to happen.
  • Morally Ambiguous Doctorate: Played for Laughs with Bubs claiming to be a doctor (there's even quotations on the business card calling him a "Dr.") and trying to pass off a pancreas to Homestar in an obvious attempt to cover up an illegal scheme. He even calls himself "the most quackinest" when Homestar accuses him of being an unethical quack.
  • Mundane Made Awesome: After finding his favorite pair of underwear, Strong Sad comes in at the end to triumphantly declare "The world is saved! I found the blue ones!"
  • New Jobs As The Plot Demands: Bubs' business cards include "bail bondsman", "paranormal investigator", "normal investigator", and "VCR repair/fashion consultant".
  • Noodle Incident:
    • Bubs is seen burning an envelope marked "EXHIBIT A", and the pancreas he offers Homestar is in a cooler marked "EXHIBIT B", implying he was caught up in organ trafficking.
    • Strong Sad alludes to one after Strong Bad addresses him as "Dairy Queen":
Strong Sad: I already told you, I don't want to be called that any more! I made a mistake!
Strong Bad: Oh, sorry, Dairy Queen.
  • Orphaned Punchline: A couple of 'em.
    • From the TV show Strong Sad is watching near the beginning, we hear a narrator going "...and that's why come Shakespeare was so awesome."
    • During his conversation with Pom Pom, the King of Town remarks "I keep telling him the sun don't rise and set on that pile of whatsit, but he don't want to listen!"
  • Punctuated! For! Emphasis!: After hearing the "Who Shot Caleb?" episode is coming up, Strong Bad exclaims, "Oh, there's no way I'm missing that one! NO. WAY."
  • Shout-Out: The "Who Shot Caleb" plot line is a reference to "Who Shot J.R.?"
  • Unfortunate Search Results: Strong Sad complains that he did an image search for "the blue ones" and found "nothing, or... nothing pleasant, anyway."
