A quest to uncover secret information about Ahlberg leads Hilda on a high-seas adventure with the Wood Man that lands them in a boatload of trouble.

Song at the end: "Let The Tall Ships Sail" by Walter Martin

Tropes:

  • Adaptation Expansion: A single panel in a Time-Passes Montage in the "Hilda and the Stone Forest" book shows Hilda on a ghost ship; this episode appears to be an adaptation of that.
  • All for Nothing: When Hilda finally delivers the sandwich to the Rat King, she is shocked to learn that he can not find a single secret about Ahlberg.
  • Bittersweet Ending: The Draugen are reunited with their friends and families, but the Rat King is unable to find any dirt on Ahlberg, despite all the trouble Hilda, Twig, and Wood Man had went through beforehand.
  • Call-Back: Hilda still has the resurrection sticks she used to wake the dead in "The Ghost", and they're still annoyed with her.
  • Cliffhanger: Hilda fails to expose Ahlberg as the Trolberg citizens refuse to listen to her, and the Rat King has no useful information about him.
  • Color-Coded for Your Convenience: The draugen are colored seafoam green to differentiate them from regular ghosts, which are colored purple. After being reunited with their loved ones, the draugen turn purple, indicating that they're now normal ghosts.
  • Covered in Gunge: Everything the draugen ship passes through gets covered in ectoplasm.
  • Exact Words: The Wood Man tells Hilda that he never said he wanted to help the draugen, just that he wanted to find them.
  • Facepalm: Abigail does this in response to Nicholas telling Hilda about the race-loophole.
    • Hilda also does this after Ahlberg claims that he is to thank for stopping the Draugen ship and being dismissive of her.
  • Food as Bribe: Instead of secrets the rat king's willing to trade research on Ahlberg for a cod fish sandwich out of the garbage.
  • Fed to the Beast: The draugen try to feed Hilda, Wood Man and Twig to the Salt-Lions so they can join them in dead as Draugen.
  • Ghost Ship: The draugen ship. It can both fly and sail on land.
  • Loophole Abuse: Hilda uses a loophole that all prisoners of the draugen can win their freedom by beating the draugen ship in a race. Unfortunately for her and Wood Man, even after they won the race, Abigail refuses to accept the loss and threatens to make them draugens anyway.
  • Multi-Part Episode: Connected with "The Troll Circle", much like how the first season started.
  • Shaming the Mob: Hilda tries this with the sailors when they are about to attack Wood Man, saying it's worse than leaving a game to beat up someone just because you lost. Unfortunately, Wood Man ruins it with his obnoxious remarks.
  • Ship Out of Water: The Draugen's Ghost Ship can sails over land, phasing through the buildings and people they run over.
  • Sore Loser: The sailors whom Wood Man was playing with. They demand that Wood Man keeps playing with them so they can try to win back what they lost, and when Wood Man refuses they kick him out of the Salty Maiden. True, Wood Man was being his usual, obnoxious self, but as Hilda points out he won fair and square and there’s no rule against stopping a game once you’re ahead.
  • Stealing the Credit: Erik Ahlberg claims he got rid of the Draugen ship, while in fact it was Hilda’s doing. Hilda even tries to call out on Erik for doing so, but he quickly shuts her up.
Hilda: Hey! You can't take credit for that!
    Erik Ahlberg: Why not?
Hilda: [groans as she facepalms in annoyance]
  • Stuffed into a Trashcan: The sailors do this to Hilda and Wood Man after Wood Man angers them.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome:
    • Did they think the Vittra wouldn't attack the workers when they tried to fill in their tunnels?
    • Despite being rather slimy, Erik isn't doing anything illegal and his Glory Hound tendencies alone are difficult to impossible to prove with physical evidence.
  • "You!" Exclamation: The Ghost of Abigail's Dad did this upon seeing and recognizing Hilda before calling her out for waking him and the other ghosts from their slumber.
Abigail's Dad's Ghost: Who do you think you are, waking us up all at once like that?!
