Recap / Hercules The Animated Series S 1 E 27 Hercules And The Dream Date

Go To

Herc's desperate for a date to the upcoming Aphrodesian Dance, but he's over-enthusiastic with girls, so they run a mile. As a last resort he gets the lovely Aphrodite to turn a clay model girl into the real thing - with one stipulation, she has to love him.

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • An Aesop: Don't just focus on outward appearances when looking for a romantic partner, and a relationship isn't healthy if one person is wholly invested in the other to the detriment of everything else. And, while this isn't addressed in the episode itself: if your relationship has problems, don't sweep your issues under the rug — or maroon them on a remote island, as it were — and ignore them or hope they'll go away.
  • Animation Bump: This episode has MUCH more fluid animation compared to other episodes, and was made with digital ink-and-paint (which allowed for some shading), resulting in less of a filmed look and more in-line with the later DTV sequels. This was because it was produced at the Australian studio, which often had more fluid looking character animation in their projects.
  • Breast Expansion: Aphrodite really doesn't like how many times Hercules asks her to make Galatea curvier.
  • Clingy Jealous Girl: Galatea doesn't like seeing other girls around Hercules. She doesn't like Cassandra until the girl makes it clear she isn't interested in Hercules and threatens to rip out Helen's vocal cords for being friendly with him.
  • Didn't Think This Through: Once it's clear that she's becoming dangerous, Hercules strands Galatea on a small island far out to sea and thinks that solves the problem — but he doesn't take into account that she's still made of clay, however animated she is, and doesn't need to breathe. She simply walks into the water and travels across the seabed to catch up with him.
  • Dude Magnet: Galatea.
  • Exact Words: When crafting Galatea's personality the only thing Hercules cares about is that she be "crazy about him". Aphrodite gives him exactly what he asked for. Emphasis on the 'crazy'.
  • Gone Horribly Right: Hercules got exactly the kind of girl he asked for. The problem is he wasn't careful about what he asked for.
  • Ignored Aesop: Hercules gets the lesson that you shouldn't focus on outward appearances. Pygmalion did not. He's quite happy to put up with his wife being a crazy jealous clay monster since he's an unattractive old man and she's a gorgeous redhead. Aphrodite even lampshades to Herc that not everybody gets the lesson.
  • Shout-Out: Galatea's clay-monster form undergoes some Terminator-like transformations and at one point Cassandra drives up in a chariot and tells Herc, "Come with me if you want to live."
  • Ugly Guy, Hot Wife: Mr. Pygmalion the art teacher is a short and toothless old man. His wife is a gorgeous, breathy-voiced redhead who is head over heels in love with him. Hercules can't believe it until he's told that's because the man sculpted her out of clay.
  • Yandere: Herc asked Aphrodite to make Galatea "crazy about him", and she complies. Unfortunately, the "crazy" manifests as her being insanely jealous and willing to do anything to keep Herc to herself.
