Recap / Hell Girl S 3 E 25 Yuzuki

Go To

At first, Yuzuki doesn't believe Ai's words when she said that Yuzuki had died some time back, but later Ai shows Yuzuki the world that she grew up in.

Originally, Yuzuki lived happily with her parents, until her father, a bus driver, died in a bus crash due to faulty brakes. As the bus corporation shirked its responsibility, the whole town accused the Mikage family of murder and being irresponsible. Yuzuki's mother did her best to keep Yuzuki alive and happy, working at the Oikawa Store, but was eventually forced to quit. Sick and without a means to support herself and Yuzuki, she decides to leave and does so with Yuzuki. It's implied that close to death, Yuzuki's mother planned on killing Yuzuki to spare her from suffering any longer, as she appears to be reaching for her neck as she rests in her arms. She stops, however, when a couple of girls show up at the shrine they were staying at. After her mother dies, Yuzuki buries her mother's corpse beneath the full-bloomed cherry blossoms. Yuzuki's eyes turn a deep red at the immense rage of her unfair treatment by her neighbors, and walks away. She murders all of the residents in her apartment building, taking their lives away after their refusal to save her mother's and leaves the complex as an empty shell. Her last moments as a child are seen, lying on the floor embracing the bear her father gave her.

The fake older body of Yuzuki picks up pictures from the floor next to the corpse of who she now knows to be hers and accepts her fate as Hell Girl. As Ai disappears, Yuzuki is clothed in a red kimono similar to Ai's. Akie somehow returns and acts as Yuzuki's aid. At the end of this episode, a message arrives onto Yuzuki's PC, signaling that someone is summoning her. Yuzuki prepares for her first mission as the new Hell Girl.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Adults Are Useless: Nearly every adult Yuzuki runs to for help for her mother dismisses her clearly distressed cries, claiming that a child's troubles are "negligible" and that Yuzuki is probably just exaggerating.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: The Oikawa store worker. He initially seems like the only person that will show Sayo and Yuzuki any kindness despite the rumors floating around about them, but later tries to make advances on Sayo when she's clearly vulnerable, only to be interrupted by a customer. He also ignores Yuzuki's cries for help due to his disgruntlement at being rejected, implying that his kindness was only a front.
  • The Bully: Nearly every minor character in this episode begins to treat Yuzuki and her mother, Sayo terribly due to the accident Yuzuki's father was a part of. Even the doctors turn Sayo away when she needs medical care.
  • Blood from the Mouth: Used to show the progression of Sayo Mikage's illness.
  • The Bus Came Back: An illusion of Akie appears to assist Yuzuki after the latter's ascension to Hell Girl.
  • Dying Alone: Yuzuki dies in grief, clinging to the teddy bear her father gave her alone in her family's apartment.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: When Yuzuki accepts her role as the next Hell Girl, she asks Ai's companions if they will stay and help her now that Ai has disappeared. Honne Onna, Ichimokuren, and Kikuri all decide to leave, and while it initially seemed as though Yamawaro planned to stay, he's forcefully dragged away by Kikuri. Wanyuudou is the only one who agrees to help her.
  • Evil Costume Switch: Yuzuki dons a red version of Ai's kimono after accepting her role as the next Hell Girl.
  • Faceā€“Heel Turn: Having come to terms with her past, her death, and the fact that everyone turned their backs on her when she needed them, Yuzuki realizes the importance of Hell Girl and talks about purifying the world as the next Ai. However, she hasn't completely turned to the dark side, as she makes a promise to not allow any innocent souls to fall into Hell like Akie had.
  • Full Episode Flashback: Most of the episode takes place in a flashback to the final months of Yuzuki and her parents' lives, as Ai and her companions try to help Yuzuki remember what happened.
  • Incurable Cough of Death: Yuzuki's mother gains one mid-way through the episode. The hospital she visits refuses to help her, and it eventually leads to her death.
  • Mercy Kill: Knowing that she's going to die from her illness, Yuzuki's mother attempts to strangle Yuzuki so that she won't be left alone in a world that resents her. She isn't able to go through with it due to two students that came to pray outside of the shrine distracting her and she dies a few minutes later.
  • Red Eyes, Take Warning: Yuzuki's irises become red after she accepts her role as the next Hell Girl.
  • Sins of Our Fathers: A child Yuzuki is treated horribly by everyone in her town due to her father, a bus driver, inadvertently killing several people in a bus accident that he couldn't have prevented.
  • Undying Loyalty: When asked by Yuzuki if they'll assist her now that Ai is gone, nearly all of Ai's former companions decide to leave, with the exception of Wanyuudou and Yamawaro, though Kikuri forces Yamawaro to leave anyway.
