Recap / Harley Quinn 2019 S 3 E 3 The83rd Annual Villy Awards

Go To

Harley and Ivy attend the 83rd annual Villain Awards Ceremony, where they got nominated as the best couple.

Tropes:

  • Accidental Misnaming: When Harley and Ivy meet Riddler and Clock King, Harley accidentally calls the latter "Cock King", which Clock King corrects, pointing out that that's another villain entirely. Later, when she's fighting the robot holding the winners, she calls an invisible person in the stall "Invisible Kid", which he corrects as "Imperceptible Man".
  • Adaptational Sexuality: The Riddler and the Clock King, who have been portrayed as straight in the comics, are a couple and running against Ivy and Harley in the Best Couple category.
  • All for Nothing: Harley beats up the robot guarding the results envelope to find out who won Best Couple, only for the robot to snatch it back and eat it. She and Ivy talk about it and agree to leave the Villies... just before Joker confirms that they won best couple.
  • Always Someone Better: Kite Man mentions that he didn't win the category of Best D-List Villain, implying that he lost to Codpiece.
  • Amicable Exes: Ivy and Kite Man. There is some awkward tension between them but Ivy is genuinely thrilled to find out that Chuck has found a new girlfriend and Kite Man expresses nothing but full support for Ivy and Harley's relationship.
  • Celebrity Cameo: Billy Bob Thornton plays Thomas Wayne in the biopic Clayface is working in. Later in the episode he is killed by Catwoman's tiger and Clayface decides to pretend to be him.
  • Chekhov's Gun: At the start of the episode Catwoman tells the gang to not open a green door in her penthouse. Later Billy Bob Thornton mistakes it for the bathroom door, opens it and promptly gets eaten by a tiger who lives in the room.
  • Compensating for Something: Just like in the comics, Harley points out that Codpiece's signature equipment might be overcompensating for something.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • Things between Kite Man and Ivy are very much awkward.
    • Joker mentions his wife and kids
    • He also keeps belittling Bane at every opportunity.
    • Bane still wants the pasta maker back. And still nobody respects him, as Cheetah walks away when he asks about an after party.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?:
    • "The Villys" look very much like a composite of The Oscars and The Emmy Awards.
    • Catwoman berating the lack of racial diversity in the nominations sounds very similar to the #OscarsSoWhite critique.
  • Evil Is Petty: The android eats the "Best Couple" envelope just to spite Harley for beating him.
  • Flipping the Bird: Ivy gives both her middle fingers when she and Harley leave the award ceremony out of spite.
  • Fluffy the Terrible: Catwoman has a pet tiger named Princess. Apparently she locked said tiger up for misbehaving, and then Clayface accidentally sends Billy Bob Thornton to his death when he mistakenly points to the tiger's room as the bathroom.
  • Freeze-Frame Bonus: Guests at the ceremony include KGBeast, Zod, Metallo, Captain Cold, Sinestro, Toyman, Maxie Zeus, Nora Fries, Solomon Grundy, Firefly, Killer Croc, Black Manta, The Dollmaker, Calendar Man, Cheetah, Gorilla Grodd, Killer Frost, Man-Bat, and Reverse Flash. And Bane has brought his aunt with him.
  • Girlfriend in Canada: Subverted. At first it seems like this is what Kite Man is going for by claiming that his 100% real girlfriend is just running late and Harley and Ivy definitely think so. Then, however, Ivy goes outside for some air and runs into a girl who turns out to actually be Kite Man's new girlfriend, Golden Glider, but is too anxious to go inside. Ivy convinces her to be there for Kite Man and things end well.
  • Gory Discretion Shot: After Billy Bob Thornton gets mauled to death by Catwoman's tiger, Clayface calls up King Shark and asks for his help. Cue King Shark walking out of the room with blood on his face, having presumably eaten the body.
  • The Hilarity of Hats: Bane is wearing a big goofy one as part of his "formal wear" (which is basically just a bowtie and said hat over his regular outfit).
  • In Memoriam: In-Universe, a video is screened that includes Scarecrow, Mr. Freeze, Penguin, Queen of Fables, and even Francois the Mouse, with causes of death for each one of them. The one for Mr. Freeze? "It's complicated."
  • Kill and Replace: After Billy Bob Thornton gets eaten by a tiger, Clayface decides to replace him with James Gunn none the wiser.
  • The Missus and the Ex:
    • Joker invokes this trope on purpose by sitting Ivy and Harley at the same table as Kite Man.
    • Ivy and Golden Glider meet up without realizing this trope is in play, get along, then realize it and bond over it.
  • Mythology Gag:
  • Non-Human Head: Clock King seems to have an actual clock for a face, as the hour marks start running when he begins to cry.
  • Shout-Out: The android that Harley fights spews out white fluid that looks like milk.
  • Take That!: Important guests at the 83rd annual Villy Awards include Sinestro, Solomon Grundy, and Kevin Spacey (who even played Lex Luthor once).
  • White Guilt: Lampshaded when Catwoman gets an honorary Villy and then asks why it's taken them 83 years to award any black villains, making everyone in the room (except Black Manta) very uncomfortable before she leaves to go take care of Princess.
Catwoman: Black Manta's been out here for years as a marquee villain, and you don't see him getting an award!
    Joker: He's black?
  • Yank the Dog's Chain: Billy Bob Thornton sees through Clayface's disguise, but actually admires his gumption and offers to take him on as an apprentice. Then Clayface accidentally sends him to the wrong room and he gets eaten by a tiger.
