In the season finale, Lumpy and Flippy are watching a swim race on TV when Flippy has another episode and becomes Flipqy. Lumpy's escape from Fliqpy gets sidetracked when the former gets involved in a swimming race.
"By the Seat of Your Pants" provides examples of:
- An Arm and a Leg: Handy (again!) has his legs chopped off, rendering him immobile.
- Continuity Nod: This the second time that Handy's legs have been cut off. The first being in "Class Act".
- Cruel and Unusual Death:
- Sniffles has his head sliced open off-screen.
- Fliqpy is impaled on a flag pole and subsequently disemboweled by Lumpy.
- The Dog Bites Back: Lumpy killing Fliqpy.
- Fan Disservice: Lumpy wearing his skin-laced swimming briefs while his lower half is completely skinless.
- Flaying Alive: The lower half of Lumpy's body gets skinned. Amazingly, this doesn't faze him very much.
- Impaled with Extreme Prejudice: Fliqpy gets impaled by the top of a flagpole.
- Irony: Despite having a high survival rate, Fliqpy ends up as the final character to die this season.
- Karmic Death: After murdering another chunk of Tree Friends, Fliqpy is killed in the end.
- Killed Offscreen: In a first-person view, we see Lumpy dive into the pool. When he comes up, he sees that Fliqpy has killed most of the audience off-screen.
- Offscreen Reality Warp: When Lumpy dives, he resurfaces a few seconds later to see that Fliqpy killed almost everyone else nearby within that period.
- Off with His Head!:
- Toothy's head is ripped from his body off-screen.
- Truffles's cameo is his severed head.
- Pun-Based Title: The title of this episode is another way of saying "by the seat of one's pants," which is a figurative way of saying "by sheer luck."
- Shrunk in the Wash: In a weird example, Lumpy takes his flayed skin from his lower half to the laundromat, because it's stretched too much for him to wear. After putting it in the dryer, it shrinks into swim trunks.
- Surprisingly Happy Ending: Lumpy manages to survive and puts an end to Fliqpy's mass killings.
- They Killed Kenny Again: Flaky, Nutty, Toothy, Truffles, Giggles, Sniffles, and Flippy/Fliqpy die in this episode.
- Took a Level in Badass / Smart Ball: Lumpy, big time. Not only does he manage to stay one step ahead of Fliqpy during the entire episode, but he even kills Fliqpy in the end and survives.
- Not to mention that this is the second time that Lumpy fought Fliqpy and won. (The first being "Remains to be Seen".)
- Throw the Dog a Bone: Lumpy, Cuddles, Cro Marmot, Russell, Disco Bear, The Mole, and Handy survive this episode.
