100 episodes in, time to find the treasure.

What's past is prologue.

Nick and Monroe discover the hidden treasure in the Black Forest. But others are acting to make sure they don't make it home with their find.

A figure from Rosalee's past comes back to haunt her, while the Hexenbiest suppression on Adalind begins to wear off.

Renard, Hank, and Wu hunt down an assassin. An anonymous tip advances their investigation, but is there more to it than they realise?

This episode provides examples of:

  • Anti-Climax: After one hundred episodes, the gang open the chest and finally lay eyes on the Crusaders' treasure, which Royals have hunted and Grimms have laid down their lives to protect for eight hundred years. It's a stick. Subverted as the stick turns out to have healing powers.
Monroe: They wouldn't have buried a stick. Unless they were some kind of dog Wesen.
  • Ask a Stupid Question...: Trying to find the hiding place in the catacombs, Nick asks, "Nobody would come down here without light, right?" prompting Monroe to answer, "Not if they wanted to see anything!" Subverted as Nick realises the spot is marked in a way that can only be seen in darkness.
  • Blood Magic: In addition to the keys, the chest containing the treasure is sealed with something that only unsticks when exposed to the blood of a Grimm.
  • Call-Back: After sending her letters and calling her, Rosalee's ex Tony shows up at the Spice Shop demanding she give him five thousand dollars for some unspecified purpose.
  • Chekhov's Gun: Monroe is bitten by one of the Wesen mob in the Black Forest. He chooses to wait until they get back to Portland before treating the wound, which gets infected and steadily worse until he passes out... just in time to showcase the treasure's healing powers.
  • Dirty Coward: It doesn't seem coincidental that Tony chose to approach Rosalee just when her Blutbad husband and her Grimm friend are out of town, especially when it later turns out that he's part of Black Claw who are watching them.
  • Domestic Abuse: Tony's response to Rosalee refusing to give him money is to throw jars at her, strongly implying their past relationship was abusive. When she continues to refuse, he hits her.
Tony: You know me, Rosy, and you should know better than to piss me off.
  • Fingore: Adalind's powers come back when Tony tries to hit her. She stops his hand in mid-air and bends his fingers back to breaking point one by one.
  • Healing Factor: The treasure of the Seven Knights turns out to be a stick with healing powers. It heals Monroe's potentially-fatal infected wound perfectly in a few seconds of contact.
  • He Went That Way: Nick and Hank find where they left their rental car, but it's guarded by two village Wesen. Knowing a fight will draw the others, Nick has an idea: Monroe woges and calls out in German, telling the guards that the others have cornered the Grimm and need their help.
Monroe: Not all Blutbaden look alike, you know!
Nick: I know, but it's dark, and if they're looking for a Grimm, the last place they'd expect to find one is with a Blutbad in the middle of the Black Forest.
  • Oh, Crap!:
    • Nick and Monroe, when they escape from the catacombs with the treasure only to see the lanterns of the villagers coming to find them.
    • Adalind, when her Hexenbiest powers come back as she's certain Nick will leave her.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Meisner calls Renard out for killing Manano, who HW were tracking to find Black Claw. Renard in turn calls Meisner out for not sharing his plans if he doesn't want murder suspects arrested.
  • Pop the Tires: Nick and Monroe reach their rental car ahead of the village mob hunting for them. The villagers' cars are there, so they take a moment to slash one tire per car so they can't be followed.
  • Pun: From Wu, naturally, as the gang try to figure out why a stick would be so valuable.
Wu: Well, if it was a stick-mata... Sorry, that was a reach.
  • Shout-Out:
    • The title is based on Into the Woods.
    • The campaign poster Rachel Wood shows Renard is based on the 2008 Obama Hope poster.
  • Spotting the Thread:
    • After Marwan is killed, Hank points out that he's changed his appearance since the shooting; how did the person who called in the tip recognise him? This leads Renard to realise he was set up.
    • Renard realises Rachel Wood was in on Dixon's shooting when he watches footage of the rally and sees her glance at the balcony seconds before the shooting.
  • Start of Darkness: Black Claw reveal their plans for Renard: he's to become mayor, off the good publicity of catching Dixon's killer so quickly. Renard is clearly seduced by the promise of power.
  • Torches and Pitchforks: The Wesen villagers searching for Nick and Monroe to prevent them finding the treasure has a definite feel of this trope to it, although the torches are modern electric ones.
  • "X" Marks the Spot: The treasure is hidden behind a wall marked by a pile of skulls, seven of which are turned inward in a G shape.
