While Gordon deals with the fallout from killing Mario, he and Bullock discover that one of Jerome's followers is trying to resurrect him. Nygma takes the first steps in taking down Penguin. Bruce helps Selina deal with her mother's return.

  • Avenging the Villain: Falcone wants Gordon dead for killing Mario.
  • Back from the Dead: Dwight is working on doing this with Jerome, though right now the test subjects all die again shortly after.
  • The Bus Came Back:
    • Technically Jerome, even if just as a frozen corpse right now.
    • Clayface, not seen since the end of Season 2, returns on Nygma's payroll.
    • Barnes, who hasn't been seen since he was locked up in Arkham, is visited by Lee to find out if there was any chance Mario could have been cured.
  • Daddy Had a Good Reason for Abandoning You: Maria says she had to abandon Selina, as she was in trouble and couldn't go on the run with a five year old.
  • Dark Messiah: Dwight and the rest of Jerome's imitators see him as some sort of savior, helping to teach Gotham how to be The Unfettered.
  • Dead Person Impersonation: Clayface pretends to be Penguin's father's ghost as part of a plan to unhinge him.
  • Death Is Cheap: Lampshaded by Harvey:
"Doesn't anyone die in Gotham anymore?"
  • Fully-Embraced Fiend: Barnes accepts what Alice's blood has done to him, seeing it as having "cured" him of everything that was holding him back.
  • Gaslighting: Nygma's plan to make Penguin look like a lunatic on live TV by having Clayface impersonate Cobblepot's dead father, convincing him he's seeing a ghost that no one else can.
  • Idiot Ball: At no point does Jim deign to mention to either Carmine or Lee that Mario was holding a knife, and clearly about to stab Lee. While Lee does come to the conclusion that Mario was a danger to her of her own accord, Jim could have saved himself a couple of attempts on his life with that little tidbit.
    • It's possible that he's already told them, but they don't believe him due to the lack of physical evidence (the knife fell into the lake and floated away) and their own prejudices towards Jim due to his behavior.
  • MacGuffin: The crystal owl Bruce stole from the Court of Owls, which has a map hidden in its structure that's only visible when the light hits it just right.
  • Mythology Gag: A good amount of Jerome's followers sport white face paint, black makeup around their eyes, and red lips that appear to form a smile. Sound familiar?
    • A whole gang/cult devoted to the late Joker? It's The Jokerz.
  • Nothing Personal: Zsasz takes the time to warn Gordon that he's going to be ordered by Falcone to kill him, but that it's not personal on Zsasz's part (he didn't even like Mario). And when Lee convinces Falcone to call off the hit, Zsasz has no problem walking away.
  • Professional Killer: Zsasz, as Gordon points out.
  • Villainous Legacy: As shown in his last appearance, Jerome's actions have started a movement among Gotham's lunatic fringe.
  • Villainous Rescue: Falcone shows up at the last moment to call off the hit that he put on Gordon.
