Directed by Bill Eagles

Written by Jordan Harper & Megan Mostyn Brown

Penguin is coerced, by the Galavan siblings' abduction of his mother, to arrange for a series of arson crimes against Wayne-owned buildings. Selina is used to obtain the help of professional arsonists. Selina's friend Bridget ends up working as the principal arsonist and killing a police officer. Theo Galavan asks James to give him an endorsement in his run for mayor.

  • An Arm and a Leg: This happened to one of the Galavans' ancestors at the hands of a Wayne.
    • Penguin does the same to Butch so that he can gain the Galavans' sympathy and infiltrate them.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: Bridget and Selina give each other one. Neither one has an answer.
Bridget: What good's freedom if you're alone?
Selina: What good's family if you're a slave?
  • Borrowed Biometric Bypass/Eye Scream: Tabitha cuts out Banderslaw's eye to open a retina-scan lock.
  • Cop Killer: Firefly becomes this when a flamethrower malfunctions.
  • Disproportionate Retribution:
    • Even assuming that Celestine Wayne was telling the truth and Caleb did try to rape her, the annihilation of the rest of the Dumas family, who had nothing to do with the incident, really is quite excessive.
    • On the flipside, Theo going after Bruce also counts as this since he has literally no idea what happened, and is indeed trying to make amends for his family's misdeeds.
  • Dysfunctional Family: Firefly is asked to become an arsonist because the Pike brothers ask her to do it for the family. If she decides they are not her family, they will expel her or make her walk the streets as a hooker.
  • Fire-Breathing Weapon: Firefly is using a flame thrower when she ends up killing an officer.
  • Gender Flip: Most versions of Firefly are male. This version is a girl.
  • Hair-Trigger Explosive: A brick of C4 explodes violently when hit by a bullet. In real life only a detonator can make this stuff go off, even throwing it in a fire won't work. That's kind of the whole point.
  • Hypocrite: When Selina's trying to talk Bridget out of arson, she says the Pike brothers aren't her family, her mom just used to bang their dad. But when Bridget mentions Selina's mother, she quickly gets offended.
  • I Have Your Wife: The Galavans have Penguin's mother, although this may not be his total motive. Penguin tries to convince the kidnappers that he would work with them even if they did not threaten his mother.
  • Ludicrous Gibs: After Gordon's bullet hits the C4 stuffed in his pants, you can actually see numerous pieces of Joe Pike as he blows the hell up.
  • The Mole: Penguin prepares Butch to be a convincing mole. He cuts off his hand so it will be possible to believe that Butch would betray Penguin.
  • Mythology Gag: The names of the other patrician families who ruled Gotham alongside the Waynes two centuries ago:
    • The Dumas family have their own religious order, named after their Patron Saint — that is, the Order of St. Dumas, the creators of Azrael.
    • The Kanes are the family that produced Batwoman and are traditionally the family of Martha Wayne.
    • The Elliots are likely the family that produced Bruce's bully Tommy Elliot, who would later become Hush in the comics.
    • The Crownes are connected in the comics to the backstory of the Night of the Owls storyline.
  • Obfuscating Insanity: Cobblepot acts paranoid in front of Tabitha Galavan in order to make his staged dismissal of Butch more believable.
  • Orwellian Retcon: It is alleged that the Wayne family did something like this in universe, removing the Dumas family from history. This is the reason for the Galavans (the renamed Dumas) targeting the Waynes' belongings.
  • Refuge in Audacity: The Merc. With the PA system announcing price check on weapons.
  • Riddle for the Ages: The truth about Celestine and Caleb's relationship. Did he really try to rape her, or were they lovers and she betrayed him? The way Edwige tells the story heavily implies the relationship was consensual, but the audience has no way of knowing one way or the other.
  • Shoot the Messenger: When one of Penguin's Mooks tells him that the cops have shut down his counting house, Penguin beats the living hell out of him with a fireplace poker.
  • Sins of Our Fathers: The Galavans wants revenge on the Waynes for the Waynes ruining their ancestors, the Dumas family, two hundred years earlier.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Joe Pike gets into a shootout with the cops while he has a brick of C4 inside his pants.
  • Wants a Prize for Basic Decency: The Pike brothers are sadistic arsonists-for-hire who verbally abuse their younger stepsister and treat her like a slave, and yet the eldest brother considers himself a “decent guy” because he allows said stepsister to live in his apartment and doesn’t force her into The Oldest Profession.
  • Welcome to Evil Mart: "The Merc" is not just a black market. It's effectively an evil CostCo, complete with announcements on two-for-one sales on its merchandise. Where else but Gotham, right?
  • Would Hurt a Child: The fact that the last surviving Wayne is a boy is not stopping the Galavans.
  • Written by the Winners: The Waynes renamed streets and landmarks formerly named for the Dumas family in order to wipe them from history.
