Nygma tries to deal with Detective Dougherty on Kringle's behalf, while Bruce and Selina go to the charity ball.
Tropes:
- All Girls Want Bad Boys: Well that's what Kringle wants. Her new boyfriend turns out to be about as nice as the previous one.
- Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Dougherty initially came off as a somewhat friendly guy. In this episode, he's turned into a shameless misogynist.
- Cat Scare: Happens to Lee twice in the same scene. The first time involving an actual cat, and the second time with Gordon, who came to protect her from the Ogre.
- Domestic Abuser: Dougherty turns into one.
- Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Penguin once again displays genuine love for his mother Gertrude, lying to her to spare her feelings and deciding to kill Maroni after he exposes his true nature to her.
- Foreshadowing:
- Maroni to Cobblepot: "What kind of a psychopath would stick a knife into a person over and over and over again?" We soon see two examples of said kind in one episode, including the person to whom this comment is directed.
- Nygma stabs a watermelon repeatedly at the beginning of the episode, just as he stabs the officer later.
- Improvised Weapon: Maroni mockingly sends a glass bouquet of roses to Penguin's mother after having revealed to her that her son is a criminal. Penguin smashes the bouquet and stabs the deliveryman with one of the shards.
- Jerkass: Dougherty falsely apologizes to Kringle for abusing her and then proceeds to tell Nygma that women need a "firm hand".
- Mama Didn't Raise No Criminal: Gertrud is shocked and horrified by the accusation that her son is a criminal.
- My God, What Have I Done?: Nygma has a major freak out after killing Dougherty.
- Mythology Gag: Bruce and Selina dancing together at a charity ball could be a nod to Batman Returns and the Dark Knight Rises where they did the same thing.
- Selective Obliviousness: Maroni implies this of Cobblepot's mother, who may have known on some level that her son is a monster.
- She Cleans Up Nicely: Selina Kyle when she gets dressed for the ball.
- She has a similar reaction, seeing Bruce in a tux for the first time.
- Shoot the Messenger: Penguin decides to off the deliveryman for Maroni's bouquet.
- There Is No Kill Like Overkill: When Nygma stabs Kringle's boyfriend again and again. Leads into a sort of Villainous BSoD; he freezes and keeps saying "Oh, dear..." over and over.
- Thou Shalt Not Kill: Bruce, in direct response to the events of last episode which saw Selina dumping Reggie out a window, claims this trope, the firmest declaration of what he will become in the future (besides all the detective work, of course).
