Secrets and Loans

Rory gets her PSAT scores. The Gilmore house gets termites.

Kirk's job of the week: exterminator

Provides examples of:

  • Ain't Too Proud to Beg: Um, yeah. Lorelai is totally too proud to ask her parents for a loan to get rid of the termites. And too proud to accept any help from her mother at all. But she does beg the bankers.
  • Blatant Lies:
    • Paris claims to not care at all what Rory's PSAT scores are.
    • Sookie tries very hard to hide that Jackson is hiding in her closet.
    • Madeline trying to get Rory's PSAT scores denying Paris is sitting next to her.
    • Luke trying to give Lorelai a loan by saying she can pay in istallments and that she could write the cheques out to him.
    • Lorelai trying to convince Mr. Hahn she is responsible and reliable follows up Emily's plausible lie that they forgot something in the car by saying Emily forgot it because she herself is too responsible to forget stuff in the car.
    • Subverted with Emily claiming there's no strings attached to her co-signing the loan. All it does is have her assume Lorelai can't object to her holding DAR meetings at the inn anymore.
  • Brick Joke:
    • Rory got a 740 verbal and a 760 math. A little later, Lorelai points out that Rory is smart – at least in math, the verbal thing is just a little sad.
    • Lorelai wakes Rory in the middle of the night to tell her about how the termites are keeping her awake. Rory begs her to leave her alone as they are not bothering her. Cut to both of them walking to Sookie's in the middle of the night, being unable to sleep in a house full of termites.
    • Lorelai claims she was turned down by Jacko's Loans & Stuff. Later on, Rory mentions that she was turned down by five banks, and Lorelai has to explains that she made up "Jacko's Loans & Stuff."
  • Comically Missing the Point:
    • Downplayed with Rory, who is confused that she got a higher score in math than verbal. Still adds up to 1500.
    • Mrs. Kim thinks termites spread like the flu and that Rory is a carrier.
  • Dramatically Missing the Point:
    • Rory thinks the reason Sookie took a while to answer the phone was that she was asleep. Lorelai argues that she's probably just deaf in one ear. Both are wrong.
    • Rory doesn't get why Lane didn't tell her she wanted to be a cheerleader even as she's mocking her, and cheerleaders in general.
  • Hypocritical Humor: Kirk comments that termites aren't very bright, mistaking his nostrils for wooden tunnels, not having bothered to take a single precaution to prevent them crawling up his nose.
  • Insane Troll Logic: Rory hates basketballs for being round and hard and orange.
  • Product Placement: In-universe, Taylor peppers his speech with this.
  • Pun: Lorelai calls Rory's scores P.S.A.T.riffic.
  • Shout-Out:
    • To celebrate Rory's scores, they're going to watch the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
    • Doris Day sings "Que Sera Sera" over Lorelai's morning when she discovers that the house has termites.
    • Boys are a Nancy Drew mystery to Madeline.
    • Sookie thinks Purple Rain is a movie people traditionally watch it at slumber parties.
    • Lorelai considers making a Coyote Ugly lemonade stand.
    • Lorelai played Tevje in a local production of Fiddler on the Roof.
    • Mrs. Kim chases Rory down the street with a hose, like in Silkwood.
    • Loreali feels so rejected by banks that she should start hanging out with "The Two Coreys."
    • Hearing Luke tell her that she can pay whenever she wants, Lorelai asks if she is Tony Soprano.
    • Rory thinks the music Lane picked out for the cheerleading squad is very John Waters.
    • Lane got her fellow cheerleaders to cheer to Madness.
    • Lane identifies as a Nico-fan and Exene Cervenka wannabe.
  • Take That!: Kirk doesn't understand why anyone would like Lorelai's kitchen.
