  • Story Arc: The Mutates and the Labyrinth
  • Characters: The Manhattan Clan, Xanatos, Owen, Dr. Sevarius, the Mutates
  • Enemy(ies) : Xanatos, Dr. Sevarius

The Mutates return to Manhattan and take up residence in the Eyrie Building. Goliath abducts Sevarius to the site of Cyberbiotics' old underground research station and orders him to concoct a cure for the mutation that he had inflicted on Derek and the other Mutates. Derek finds out that Sevarius is still alive and with Goliath in the Labyrinth and pursues them; he finds and nearly kills both Goliath and Sevarius before Xanatos interrupts him and reveals that he had been responsible for the entire plot.

Xanatos and Owen return in The Price. The Mutates return in Kingdom. Dr. Sevarius returns in Monsters.

  • Ambiguous Situation: It's never made clear if Sevarius created a genuine antidote or just a vial of poison.
  • Armor-Piercing Question: "What about what we want? Please, Derek, is your vengeance more important than our humanity?"
  • Bittersweet Ending: Talon realizes he's been nothing but a pawn to Xanatos and that his quest for revenge was severely misplaced, but he finds a new purpose and reconnects with his family.
  • Continuity Nod:
    • The rest of the Maza's start to be suspicious of Derek's long absense due to not having heard from him. The last time they heard from him was prior to his mutation in "Metamorphosis".
    • When Talon brings up that Dr. Anton Sevarius is dead, Elisa Maza and Goliath immediately point out that he isn't dead being that they last encountered him in "Double Jeopardy", which is two episodes prior.
  • Despair Event Horizon: Maggie is prepared to drink the supposed cure; she wants it to be real and doesn't care if it is poison because she hates living in this form. Talon talks her down.
  • Exact Eavesdropping: Derek overheard the security guard at Gen-U-Tech telling Elisa that she had "just missed" Dr. Sevarius. From about a minute's flight away.
  • Family of Choice: Goliath offers membership in the Manhattan to the mutates since Elisa is basically part of it already. Talon thanks him but, "It appears I've found my own clan, and my own family." This happens as the mutates have a Group Hug.
  • Flashback: Two flashback scenes were used from "Metamorphosis" to bring the story up to full length: Goliath 'killing' Sevarius, and Maggie waking up to find herself at the clock tower.
  • I Choose to Stay: By the time Sevarius makes the supposed cure, Maggie is the only one who wants it. Talon just wants Sevarius to suffer for his crimes, Fang enjoys the abilities of his new form, and Claw....Claw keeps his opinion to himself.
  • I Did What I Had to Do: Discussed about between Goliath and Elisa when the latter learns about Sevarius's capture and situation. While Goliath acknowledges that what he is doing is far from upright and morally gray at best, he believes that reversing the Mutates' mutations will allow him to make up for the accident he committed earlier at the Gen-U-Tech lab. However, Elisa disapproves of this and also tells him that the ends do not justify the means and reminds him that doing so would risk making him like Xanatos.
  • I Just Want to Be Normal: Maggie and Claw, the former to the point of being willing to drink poison. Averted with Talon (who no longer cares) and Fang (who openly loves the power his mutated body gives him).
  • Jerkass Realization: When it was revealed to Derek/Talon that Sevarius and Xanatos were in cahoots all along and that Xanatos was the one who ordered for his mutation. He realized he had been antagonistic to Goliath and the Clan for nothing and that his sister had been right all along.
  • Kick the Dog: When Derek learns the truth, Xanatos also goes the extra mile to twist that knife just a little bit harder by adding, "he's [Sevarius] the doctor. You're just the experiment."
  • Kidnapped Scientist: Sevarius is kidnapped to force a cure. It is an unusual case in that it's the good guys resorting to abduction and coercion, specifically Goliath.
  • Large Ham:
  • Must Make Amends: Upon learning that he unwittingly contributed to Talon's present situation, Goliath kidnaps Dr. Sevarius in order to make him create a cure.
  • My God, What Have I Done?: Maggie after Hudson is ambushed.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: Maggie tells the other Mutates about her experience with the Manhattan Clan to try to pacify them, but it makes things worse.
Maggie: When they took me to their home—
Talon: They took you to their home?!
  • Pet the Dog: Despite what's to come Fang happily joins in the Mutates Group Hug and is there to emotionally support Talon when he reintroduces himself to the other Mazas, both times seen warmly smiling.
  • Progressively Prettier: The Mutates due to being given a new design that is more feline-like instead of an awkward feline-human mash up. The in-story justification used was that they hadn't finished mutating by the end of "Metamorphosis"
  • Red Herring: Talon is the prime suspect for abducting Sevarius, but it was actually Goliath.
  • Revenge Before Reason: Talon wants revenge against Goliath for wrecking a chance to be cured, but he also admits he is now long past caring about actually being cured.
  • Ship Tease: Talon makes what sounds like a Love Confession when he tells Maggie that "I'm not strong alone; we're strong together", and she doesn't take what is most likely poison because of this statement. The epilogue where he reunites with his family is also staged as him introducing them to his girlfriend.
  • Unwitting Pawn: Talon finally learns that he has been a sucker for David Xanatos this whole time.
  • Xanatos Gambit: This is a rare clear aversion for the Trope Namer. Xanatos loses the Mutates' loyalty with absolutely nothing to show for it save for protecting the life of a valuable employee.
  • You Are Not Alone: How Talon talks Maggie down.
