Recap / Friends S 3 E 4 The One With The Metaphorical Tunnel

Go To

Phoebe works as Joey's agent and is more successful than Estelle. Ross freaks out when he learns his son Ben has a Barbie doll. Chandler makes several mistakes in his relationship with Janice.

Tropes:

  • Brick Joke: The cold open sees the gang watching an infomercial for the Milk Master 2000 and mocking Joey for appearing in it. Later in the episode it turns out Rachel bought one and Joey gives her a delighted thumbs up when he sees her using it.
  • Commitment Issues: Chandler starts to freak out about how his relationship with Janice is progressing. On Joey's advice he decides to "face his fears" by being very committed but this just freaks her out as she's still in the process of divorcing her husband.
  • Epic Fail: According to Phoebe, a casting director said Joey somehow has a worse Italian accent than non-Italian actors.
  • Face Your Fears: The gang advise Chandler to handle his fear of commitment this way. He ends up going completely overboard and almost scares Janice away.
  • Heartbreak and Ice Cream: Monica and Rachel provide Chandler with the ice-cream while consoling him over his relationship problems. At first they give him the "low-cal, non-dairy, soy milk junk" as they save the good ice-cream for when things get really bad. Towards the end of the episode, when it looks like Chandler may have screwed things up for good, he asks if it's time for the good ice-cream which the girls finally provide. He doesn't eat it though as Janice calls him and he's given a chance to calmly apologize to her because he's crazy about her and they both tell each other that they love each other. That is the moment when Monica and Rachel get so depressed that they eat the good ice-cream themselves.
  • I Got You a Drawer: In an attempt to prove to Janice that he can commit Chandler gives her a drawer from his dresser, and the contact paper to line it.
  • Manchild:
    • Phoebe failed to write down the message about Joey's audition because she and Chandler were playing hide-and-seek at the time.
    • Upon seeing Ross desperately trying to get Ben interested in a G.I. Joe toy, Joey asks if he can play, too. Without any prompting, he shouts "Go, Joe!" along with Ross.
  • Operation: Jealousy: While Janice is grocery shopping, Chandler tries to make a show of picking up items for a woman's party. His attempt fails miserably because he's grabbing random items and making up details on the fly (e.g. a woman named Chelsea hosting a party in Chelsea).
Janice: Okay, y'know, one of two things is happening here. Either you're seeing somebody behind my back, which would make you the biggest jerk on the planet, or else you're pretending that you're seeing somebody, which just makes you so pathetic that I could start crying right here in the cereal aisle. So, like, which of these two guys do you wanna be?
    [A man walks by]
Chandler: Could I be that guy?
  • Preemptive Apology: After scaring her off with his extreme commitment talk, Chandler takes out a phone and leaves Janice a message apologizing in advance for chasing her through the street. He then immediately runs after her.
  • Too Incompetent to Operate a Blanket: Joey's role in the Milk Master 2000 infomercial is "Kevin", the guy who can't open a carton of milk without tearing it.
  • Wanted a Gender-Conforming Child: Ross spends the episode trying to get Ben to give up his Barbie and play with a traditional "boy" toy like G.I. Joe or monster trucks. Rachel, Carol and Susan call out how ridiculous he's being about it. Monica eventually gets him to drop the issue by reminding him that he used to play with dolls and dress up as a woman named "Bea".
