Tropes

  • Bait-and-Switch: It looks like Pete is about to propose to Monica, especially when she hears he just bought a ring, but then it turns out the ring is a boxing ring to practice becoming an Ultimate Fighting Champion.
  • Berserk Button: Vince takes fire safety very seriously. He ends up dumping Phoebe not because she was seeing someone else but because she took Jason on a candlelit picnic in a wooded area.
  • Dude, Not Funny!: When Chandler jokes about him and Joey playing with matches Vince sternly tells him off because fire safety isn't a joke.
  • Oh, Crap!: Phoebe reacts this way when Jason shows up at Central Perk while Vince is there. She trails off in the middle of a song and has to cut the rest of her performance short.
  • Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: Phoebe is caught between dating Vince, a firefighter with a great body, and Jason, a sensitive kindergarten teacher. She considers choosing Jason, but then finds out Vince has a poetic side too. Next, she goes over intended to break up with Jason, but he answers the door without his shirt on and it turns out he's really buff. In the end, Jason breaks up with Phoebe after finding out she had been dating them both at the same time - then Vince breaks things off because Phoebe hosted a candlelit dinner in the park, demonstrating poor fire safety.
  • "Shaggy Dog" Story: We never find out what Ross' "thing" is, and it becomes a moot point when Guru Saj accidentally shears it off with the strap of his wristwatch while looking at it.
  • Take Our Word for It: The audience never gets to see the "thing" on Ross' butt, just the confused reactions of the other characters.
  • Video Call Fail: The gang visit Pete's apartment with Monica and all dive for cover when he calls to check in with her. It doesn't work as Pete can see them all through the videophone, fortunately he doesn't mind that they're there.
